Their image first appeared in the 17th century as a carving at the famous Tōshō-gū shrine in Nikkō, Japan. The three monkeys are: - Mizaru (covering his eyes) - Kikazaru (covering his ears) - Iwazaru (covering his mouth) The concept actually originated in China as part of Confucian philosophy before making its way to Japan. In Japanese, the proverb is "mizaru, kikazaru, iwazaru" (見ざる、聞かざる、言わざる). There's a wordplay here, as "zaru" is a negative verb conjugation while "saru" means monkey. The meaning behind the proverb varies by culture. In Buddhist tradition, it's often interpreted as a way to avoid dwelling on evil thoughts or deeds. In Western culture, it's sometimes interpreted more critically as willful ignorance or turning a blind eye to wrongdoing. The monkeys are also sometimes depicted with a fourth monkey, Shizaru, who symbolizes "do no evil," though this is a later addition and not part of the original carving or concept.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

I downloaded the Gemini app recently to see how it handled a specific query. I granted the app zero permissions. (no location!) G decided to include my location anyway with my queries.

Help page claims Gemini use location permissions for the Google app. Didn't grant those, either. #BadBehavior?
