I mostly read nonfiction, plus a bit of sci fi/fantasy, contemporary Japanese novels, and some comics. Enjoyer of many things.
Yikes! My idea to post about books this year was thwarted by my own dislike of social media 🤦🏻‍♀️ Maybe I’ll get back to it… thoughts?

Continuing on the music memoir theme, I just finished reading @laurajanegrace.bsky.social’s book today. Stunner of a read.

What else have I forgotten to post about reading while I was on Bluesky hiaitus?

For starters, I listened to two rockin’ memoirs (pun intended) almost back to back: Down with the System by Serj Tankian, and Fahrenheit 182 by Mark Hoppus. I recommend both for sure

I wrote in detail. Maybe too much detail. I refused to describe myself in generic terms, like 'loving' and 'caring'. You could be a serial killer with a necklace of human ears who absolutely adores your 12 axolotls and still call yourself caring.

Perfect. Go read this.

Easily a top 10 among books I have read in recent memory. Please go read it.

They look like well-dressed cartoons. Something about Lila’s pants looking too clean or Gary's blazer too checked. … There is something embarrassing about watching a couple take photos like this. Watching a couple try to be a couple, even though they are a couple.

"Lost, unsent letters from the other world. I found them rotting inside a damp crumbling box. They smelled foul & were covered with mold & dirt, all their words & sentiments decayed. That is what happens when words are left unsaid. It does not matter how beautiful they are. In time, everything rots.

Finally got my hands on a copy of The Mourner’s Bestiary after desperately wanting to read it on @schizophrenicreads.bsky.social’s recommendation! Beautiful book so far.

being an indie bookseller in the helltimes has felt both very stable and very stabilizing, and part of me wishes everyone could be on my side of the counter for a little while, because I think it would help some of you be a little less cynical and doomy right now. so here is my VERY anecdotal data:

Finished the quick and light Heartbreak is the National Anthem by @rollingstone.com’s Rob Sheffield. I primarily found it amusing and easter-egg riddled, written by a Swifty for Swifties. One wry nugget I particularly enjoyed, though, was this excerpt about That Thing That Happened At The VMAs.

Recently read Trust Exercise by Susan Choi after seeing it on a list of something like “books that will shock you when you realize what’s going on.” It was a very unexpected style, and content-wise a complex read - especially the more I digest it after the fact. Anyone else read it or have thoughts?

I have really wanted to get into Junji Ito for a while, since my preferred comic genre tends to be more on the horror end of the scale. Checked out Black Paradox - it was ok, but I don’t think I quite “got it.” Felt rushed. Perhaps I’ll give another story a try before deciding what I think.

Another quick read from yesterday - Sheets! A cute little story, told through the eyes of a teenager running the struggling family business, and an adorable ghostie who pops over the threshold into our world. 👻 🧺 #booksky #graphicnovel 📚💙

In between the depths of Wind and Truth, I also popped over to read book 5 in the …coffee gets cold series. Another lovely set of vignettes in the Funiculi Funicula world! ☕️ 💚 #booksky

Quick graphic novel while killing time (no pun intended) at the library. True crime, bit horrible, good to read through while listening to “creaky old house” sounds on YouTube. #booksky 📚💙

Not my usual bag, but The Spellshop was the cutest, wholesome-est little cozy read! Definitely recommend for when you want to feel like you’re sitting in the sun with (apple-blossom-tailed!) birds chirping, with a big mug of tea. #booksky 📚💙

Took a social media break over the holidays, but back to start sharing what I am reading and listening to in 2025! First up was If My Body Could Speak by Blythe Baird. Tough topics, tough read, well worth picking up.

“The thing is, May,” the Hum said, “the goal of advertising is to rip a hole in your heart - so it can then fill that hole with plastic. Or, with any other materials that can be yanked out of the earth, and, after brief sojourns as objects of desire, be converted to waste.”
