Arise, arise, Writers of Dissertations!
Fell chapters awake: sections and subsections!
Words shall be shaken, citations be splintered,
a keyboard-day, a thesis day, ere the sun rises!

"A wyvern, director. It has two legs, two wings, whereas a-"

"Which flies, breathes fire, and is intelligent?"

"About as intelligent as a border collie."

"So, intelligent. Why?"

"You asked us to invent measures to take down small drones."

Had a great time at the playtest today--what a strange religious world we live in!
I have one playtester spot left if anyone wants to join! Or just stop by. Sheraton lobby by the bar. 4pm. #aarsbl25

I'm finally reading Hyperion in preparation for listening to a paper at #AARSBL2025. Guys, I knew this novel was based on the Canterbury Tales format, but nobody told me just how absolutely bonkers it is. Just finished the priest's tale, and what the absolute heck?! More later.

Getting around to posting what I've been up to and what I've been reading. Someday I'll be able to both live and blog at the same time, right?

Not sure but this might be heresy.
There's a new couch in the church foyer and it's not even flower print. Are we entering a new era?

I felt torn about adding this book to my TBR. On the one hand, the concept is right up my alley. On the other hand, I have had serious issues with every Kuang book I've read. Sounds like the issues have gotten worse, which is sad because PhD students visit Hell is such an awesome premise.
This morning I have a (rather long) review of Katabasis up at @nerdsofafeather.bsky.social. In many ways, it’s a book quite similar to Babel, but those differences (and degrees) really tell, and turn things that worked for me in one really much less successful in the other. You can read it here.

Sometimes you write a story because you can't not write this story, even if there's little to no chance it will ever be published because it's so idiosyncratic.

And sometimes, a random opportunity comes along and they want said piece. And so nothing in writing is ever wasted. 🎉

A slightly spoiler-y post about religion in Brandon Sanderson's latest secret project.
"Patji represents a god who wants us to suffer opposition to help us grow, a Latter-day Saint idea best reflected in 2 Nephi 2 and its discussion of opposition in all things."
