Sometimes it is helpful to be married to someone who grew up under authoritarianism & other times it is horrifying.

Saw this tonight & would have enjoyed it more had it not been so eerily current.
The Encores! production of ‘Urinetown,’ now at City Center, proves that this 2001 musical is still potable and weirdly prescient.

University leadership in U.S. seems to be finally speaking up. That's a good thing, I guess, but we remember their silence regarding attacks on trans folk, DEI, human rights etc.
Indirects on grants are important, but I wish it didn't take that to move the people who lead our institutions on issues.

I’m bringing home books of poetry :: 14 days is not enough time :: I am always paying library fines :: the US flag in the distance in case we forget our location :: a hummingbird souvenir with the Colombian colors in case we want to remember our mothers’ birthplace :: the scent of snow in the air

I’ve been kissing friends :: crying in the shower :: teaching about our history our presence our worth our intuition :: visiting museums libraries parks my mom :: paying attention :: paying attention :: paying attention - life during a coup

I’ve been picking fights & testing loyalties :: I’ve been reaching out & building blanket forts :: I’ve been kicking rocks & gluing jello onto walls :: I’ve been holding rage like a baby & fanning the fire that fuels my work - life during a coup

this made me cry - the sweetness - the realness
I thought I had my shit together at my place of work but the very nice lady who just rang up the cup of coffee I brought up to the register with no lid just said, “sweetheart, I see you here every week, I know you’re going to drop this. Go get a lid.”

The overwhelm is so great right now. I need someone to sit with me & gently explain what I need to do right now.

Grateful to have the privilege to be in the classroom with undergraduates. Our conversations bring light into otherwise dark days.

It’s been a really hard day. I appreciate all the advice on how to survive these times. Much of it is also sounding patronizing especially when it comes from people with significantly more privilege than me. May I learn from this, so I do not do it to others.

Do people even understand the meaning of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, justice?

Decades of doing this work, I know many really smart & kind people do not.

Officially received nonsense letters from my employers about executive orders. Flashback to March 2020 & their nonsensical communication about covid. (Different employers/same system) Why doesn’t higher Ed consult their own experts?
