These 2 (70cm sq) are done I think.
Drawn from ideas and memories of old ruins, fragments of buildings, stones and markings on islands and promontories. Excavations, history, habitations.
Remembering also my visit to the stones of #CeideFields Neolithic settlement in County Mayo

Not a single tree, but a windbreak of willows (cuttings taken and planted about 12 years ago) with more recent alders planted in front, on our land on Cruit Island, County Donegal. We are very windswept, and trees struggle. After 17 years we have established c. 100 young native trees

With snow!
Vast golden red stone medieval buildings, some with castellations, straddle a valley with a backdrop of snowclad mountains. Tall, dark green cypress trees full the spaces between the buildings. The lower edges of the steep cliff-like walls are scattered with bare branches of deciduous trees.

I love how the Duomo pops out at you! Like an unexpected surprise
An Italian street scape from a high viewpoint, mostly looking at the backs of stone and cream painted walls of tall medieval buildings, with red tile roofs uh The nearest and mid view buildings are the Uffizi Gallery. A feature in the right third of the image is a shiny vertical aluminium or steel pipe. In the distance the curved sectional roof and uppermost storey of the Duomo Cathedral peeps out at us over the horizon. A crenellated tall bell tower reaches into the grey sky on the right

There’s something about circles, or nearly circles (#enso), #spirals and roughly circular enclosed spaces, stone or steel, natural or man made ⭕️

I have often painted circular shapes and scraped circular marks

Here are a few of my own, and a #RichardSerra sculpture at SFMOMA from 2016
Rectangular mainly yellow painting, on wood panel, with a central circular shape, in purples and dark blues, made with many interwoven and overlapping marks, scrapes, and smudges. The right hand curve of the circle fades away and appears to ‘fall off’ the edge. Inspired by the making of the ‘ensō’ with a single brushstroke, this diverges from that simple idea by being made of a multitude of nearly straight marks forming the circular shape The corner of my studio with a right angle of wooden plank walls. Two large canvases, one on each wall. Both have a dark, nearly black background, with a white border (left for stretching over stretcher boards) The smaller, left canvas features a central truncated circle, in greenish grey, containing a yellow arch, with a scores triangle within that, on a grey base. Within the triangle is a roughly painted grey circle, a black circle within that, and finally a central yellow circle. The right painting is nearly 3 times the size at c.1m x 3m. Mostly a background of black and dark grey, painted over dark green. There is a nearly circular, yellow shape, left of centre, containing a series of grey, black and then yellow circles, like an eye (or a dartboard or archery target) Above this concentric circle there is an ‘eyebrow’ shape in yellow and a vertical mark in green A strong light shaft from the skylight splashed across the scene Two very small, black framed abstract paintings hanging on a white painted rough stone wall, to the right of a window, with greenery outside. The two paintings are each about 10x8 cm with a white mount. The top one is a white egg shape, with the pointed end uppermost, and the left side cropped, on a pink background, with smudged black outlines partially defining the shape. The lower painting is a roughly rectangular white shape against a pink and white background, again with a smudged black partial outline These two paintings are part of my series of ‘Tinies’ at Hambly&Hambly gallery in Fermanagh, Enniskillen, Northern Ireland Two huge connected concentric circles in rusted steel fill the foyer of a white painted modern art gallery, with two walls of glass, and stairs down in the foreground #Serra at SFMOMA.
