Happy 30th to the film Total Eclipse, based on the life of one of my favourite French poets Arthur Rimbaud.

Revisited Orwell’s 1984 since the 2025 theme for #BannedBooksWeek draws from his last novel.
Love or hate it, also still has salience for people.
I prefer the adaptation filmed in 1984, now a date passed, which nails a satiric vision of the future, at a present, informed by the past.

At the Edge of the Night by Friedo Lampe is a whirling cinematic German novel that was also banned in 1933.

Comfort reads and marking 80 years of the Moomin stories. Young or old, this philosophical children’s book series by queer Finnish creative Tove Jansson and born of a period of hardship has a message of finding refuge and embracing community.

Happy 25th to the Gotham Girls! A funny and sometimes more serious little Flash animation web-series featuring several of the women of Gotham. Including my favorite Poison Ivy. Who also featured on issue #2 of the limited comic that followed in 2002.

Too of interest regarding the 2017 movie, actor Josh Gad had a collection of personal essays published at the start of 2025. Where he’s written an entire chapter “Controversy and the Beast” about his experience working on Beauty and the Beast playing LeFou.

But watching the Disney live-action remake also made me remember the consequential article in Attitude magazine in April 2017. Which actually has many thoughtful comments and is much more than three words that were constantly repeated from it.

Beauty and the Beast is my favourite fairy tale. One people have been inspired by and adapted many times. So I can't pick a single film.

The smutty gothic dark fantasy novel Yelen & Yelena by C.M. Rosens featuring bi/pan aromantic leads and a sapphic subplot is one of the most creative retellings of Beauty and the Beast I’ve read.

A week into the #TransRightsReadathon and I also need to catch up on the ongoing erotic fantasy series Sex Wizards by Alethea Faust. I really love how detailed and clever Faust is with the magic-based kink system. 🌈📚

And Leckie's short story collection Lake of Souls published in 2024 also includes three previous stories from the Imperial Radch universe among ties to other works and standalone pieces.

A space opera recommended for its gender aspect, Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie has languished on my TBR for years. Unfortunately, despite the accolades I found it tedious rather than thought provoking.

An ongoing deeply queer scifi erotic series the Orchid and the Lion by Gabriel Hargrave is a sexy and emotional roller coaster that steps it up with each entry.

The Underwater Menace is an ambitious 1967 TV serial from Doctor Who that remains half lost. But along with the passage of time a kind of mythology of its own continues to colour what has faded or is gone. Including the novelization in 1988 by Nigel Robinson.

In the Woods by Tana French is an elegant page-turning crime mystery focusing less on resolution as truth and trauma. But hard to recommend.

In turn the film of Cabaret, traces back through versions for different audiences to stories written in the 1930s by English gay writer Christopher Isherwood. Collected as Goodbye to Berlin drawn from his expat experiences as the Nazis rose to power.

Decades later it was also star Louise Brooks in Pandora’s Box who Liza Minnelli used as an influence for her Oscar winning portrayal of the character Sally Bowles, in the 1972 film adaptation of Cabaret.

Pandora’s Box entered the public domain this year. But I still recommend the new bluray from Criterion. As the original music is lost, it features four musical score options including a Weimar-era cabaret style track. Maybe it’s just me but, I’ve been listening to a lot of Berlin cabaret lately.

G. W. Pabst’s Pandora’s Box debuted on this day in 1929.

A memorable silent film of Weimar cinema, plus early example of a lesbian character (Countess Geschwitz) on screen, adapting Frank Wedekind’s two tragic dramas which form the Lulu plays.
