Yes! When you’re new to those genres it seems confusing or weird but it’s definitely just well-established genre conventions to those who grew up with it. Like “oh no, they fell off a cliff? Alright, see you in 3-5 episodes, I guess.”

There definitely are ones that are polished stone. (The traditional shell and slate ones for sure.) Probably more likely with the double convex stones, whereas the glass ones are usually single convex.
