'Birkholz et al. have discovered that a mobile intron containing a homing endonuclease found within a viral RNA polymerase gene in one bacteriophage blocks productive infection by a related and competing coinfecting bacteriophage.'

An intron endonuclease facilitates interference competition between coinfecting viruses
Introns containing homing endonucleases are widespread in nature and have long been assumed to be selfish elements that provide no benefit to the host organism. These genetic elements are common in vi...

Fabulous- our microbiome helps make our pee yellow! Bacteria make an enzyme that breaks down toxic bilirubin into bilirubin into colourless urobilinogen, which breaks down further into yellow urobilin which is what turns our wee yellow.🧪
BilR is a gut microbial enzyme that reduces bilirubin to urobilinogen - Nature Microbiology
BilR is identified as a bilirubin reductase encoded by gut bacteria, which reduces bilirubin to urobilinogen.

Excited to share a new collaborative paper exploring how measles can come to infect the brain: journals.plos.org/plospathogen...

I'll write a thread after the break, but for now - really fun to collaborate with the recently defended Will Hannon, and the Cattaneo lab. Lots left to understand here!
