What’s a great way to spend an afternoon in Toronto? Grab a book from a little library and head to a park or café to read ☕️📚🌳

I want to visit as many little libraries as I can, either with my trusty dog Ripley or new baby Hera (or both!) 🐕 👶🏻
I’m pretty sure Spain has the best airports for a lot of reasons, but right at the top are the book exchanges I saw everywhere. Unfortunately I didn’t have an extra book to leave behind, but I’ll know for next time!

Also as a nervous flyer I was very happy to see a rainbow before takeoff!

Of course I left my final Prism Knights book, J. Kiakas’ Bronze. It’s the reason I decided to give these books away and buy the collected tome. They changed the cover designs on me, and I hate it when I have books from a series that don’t match. That being said, I do think the new design is better!

Mark Bowden’s The Finish immediately grabbed my attention, not only because it’s a hardcover with a bright cover, but because Black Hawk Down is one of my favourite books. So luckily I didn’t have to think about it and just grabbed this book. Was this the inspiration for the film Zero Dark Thirty?

It’s officially taken me 2 months to post about my walk, but we’ve finally arrived at the final free little library visited that day. This is one of the more interesting units, two full-sized shelves and a tin roof to keep out of the rain. I like the rocket-ship vibe.

Also I am quite chuffed to report that France also has little free libraries, or as this one is called: a cabinet of books.

Best Paris graffiti I’ve seen so far.

There was a series of posters thanking various museums in Paris for preserving art. As most people know the Louvre was recently the victim of a heist.

Rough translation: “Thanks to the Louvre for exhibiting this painting of Napoleon.”

Graffiti: “For now”

One of my dreams as I child was to visit Stonehenge and as an adult I finally managed to one drizzling May morning in 2009. Such a powerful place. I’d spend so much time waiting to get pictures without other people in them, but I loved every second. One day I’ll return with my own child.

And I got this neat copy of William S. Burroughs’ Naked Lunch. It’s the 50th anniversary edition, but it came out in 2009 so really this book is celebrating its 66 birthday! Anyway, the most I know about this book is that it involves drug trips and was adapted into a bat-shit crazy Cronenberg film.

I left the next Prism Knights book I had, J. Kiakas’ Sapphire. This one was based on Sleeping Beauty and I’m gonna say it was my favourite. It’s actually hard to pick a favourite, but this one stood out to me for whatever reason. I just found the writing so poetic and beautiful.

The next little library was practically impossible to reach. They were doing yard work and had one of those tree protection zones… and of course the library was INSDE the tree protection zone. It was a little awkward and involved a smidge of climbing, but I got there!

But let’s get back to our walk, shall we? We need a palate cleanser and this last little free library is actually in one of the nicest parts of Toronto. The reason why the street’s called Castle View is because it’s next to Casa Loma, as well as some swanky mansions inspired by the castle aesthetic.

A French book score! It’s not often I find non-English books, but they’re out there (like VHS tapes or CDs). Anyway, this is Caroline Darian’s Et J’Ai Cessé de T’appeler Papa, which I would translate as “And I Stopped Calling Him Dad” but the official translation is “I’ll Never Call Him Dad Again”.

Kudos to A is for Alien for knocking it out of the park!

I left behind the next in the Prism Knights series (well, not really. I think the second one might be Lamplight? They weren’t published in order, and each book is its own story, so the order doesn’t really matter, but there is *some* overlap so maybe it does?), J. Kiakas’ Velvet.

We continued on to our next little free library, this one an excellent two shelf unit that’s quite weathered.

Now, I really like it when there are two shelves, but the one problem (which we have here) is that the shelves are too short, so only pocket books fit.

Now that I have a daughter I thumb through baby books a lot. And I’ve started to notice a disturbing trend…

Do writers not know any words that start with X?

I left behind the first of four books in a series by author J. Kiakas, this first one’s called Coquelicot. There are actually two more in the series that I haven’t read yet. I intend to buy the complete edition, so I decided to give these cute pocket editions away.

There weren’t a lot of options, but luckily that was fine because I was quite keen to bring this book home with me: Susanna Clarke’s The Ladies of Grace Adieu and other stories. I absolutely loved Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell when I read it back in university. In fact I might have to re-read that…

Our first stop was the Arrowsmith School. I was expecting to find a public school, but instead found this cute private school in a renovated house.

The library itself was tiny with only two books in it and a very plain look to it. I got the impression it was new.

I was hoping one of the stories would be set in Mount Pleasant so I’d be reading a story set in the place I was sitting. No such luck, but I did find a zombie story that was pretty cool!

I was foiled again because all the benches were occupied, so I kept walking and reached Yonge St when I finally found a bench in a cute homage to the old Belt Line Railway line that used to be on the pathway.

I was out with Ripley so I wanted to go read in a park. Unfortunately nothing was super convenient. The closest bit of green to this little library was Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

However on the northwest corner of the cemetery is a nice pathway with benches one can read on.

Is this my first book return? Well certainly since I started documenting my little library trips, I think it is. I finished Myriam J. A. Chancy’s What Storm, What Thunder.

It was poetic and heartbreaking. It made me hold my daughter a little tighter after reading it.

Any time I see something set in Toronto I want to read it. So here is Toronto Comics vol. 3 from a variety of Toronto-based artists. I’m really excited for this one.

What a cute little free library I found. I really love how each library has its own personality. I just adore the vines and the blue picket fence.
