Much like when people talk about the USA being the greatest country in the whole world, it's because they've been brainwashed their whole lives to believe it and that the USA can do no wrong - everything is for the betterment of the country no matter who gets hurt

so while I don't think her compliancy is "good" I also don't think she knows/understands why the capital is "bad" because her morals are skewed. When people ask "how could they let this happen?" It's because the system in place has hidden the truth and suffering from its citizens

I think the point of Effie is to show when you're raised in a system of privilege & are brainwashed your whole life, you don't question the horrors because you're told "this is the way" & you believe it. For 75 years (before she was even born) life has been this way

The original 90s anime did SO MUCH RIGHT but also so much wrong lol The episodes that follow the manga storyline are so well storyboarded and animated. The filler episodes are goofy but kind of charming. They end the Shishio arc strongly but after that the show never recovers

I think (if I'm remembering correctly) Watsuki said he didn't like how the second OVA ending Kenshin's story because he thought Kenshin deserved a "happy ending"
