I voted early today. And when I got home I thought about the line in Gaskell's bio of Charlotte Brontë about "circumstances forced her to touch pitch" & how it's out of context but still a good description of voting, unfortunately! I vote 'cause people died so we could vote. #Vote

How is it possible that Kristi Noem still has this job. Imagine if you’re a family member or a shipmate of this guardsman.

Eighty-four years ago today, my grandfathers registered for the draft. My paternal grandfather was thirty-eight years old and worked for a construction company. My maternal grandfather was nearly forty-three years old and worked for a creamery. Neither of them were drafted--whew!

I recently watched "Henry VII: The Winter King." The subject matter was interesting but for the way it was put together it's one of the best, most intriguing documentaries I've ever seen.
Also, any "Death in Paradise" fans? My dad & I watch those a lot on PBS & Ovation & the character arcs are cool.

Rep. Lieu: “Were there any underage girls at any party that Trump attended with Epstein?”

Bondi: “This is so ridiculous…There is no evidence that Donald Trump has committed a crime. Everyone knows that.”

Lieu: “I believe you just lied under oath.”

Bondi: “Don't you ever accuse me of a crime.”

Second batch of #MolassesCookies in the oven. I ate the remains of the dough out of the bowl and the cookies will be spicy! Strong as gouge spicy, tho' "strong as gouge" is actually mainly used for strong coffee, LOL. I put extra ginger and cinnamon in the cookies. And used ribbon cane syrup.

This is that "red line" we heard so much about at the outset of Trump's second term.

I'm waiting for the oven timer to go off so I can check to see if the first batch of #MolassesCookies are ready!

So apparently people won't take the time to write their own stuff but let AI do it and still expect copyeditors to fix any problem. Whatever. I don't want to train AI. I want to copyedit for humans who take the time to write their own stuff. #Copyediting #CopyWrittenByHumans

I have been musing about the hypothesis that the ultimate consequence of SCOTUS's opinion in Trump v. U.S. will be the destruction of the rule of law in the U.S. This gift article helps to explain why, in part by emphasizing the evisceration of the Dept. of Justice.

Coffee in the snowman mug this morning,lol--I'm hoping we'll get a real snow this winter instead of the mostly ice/sleet/bit of snow that we got earlier a couple of weeks ago. ❄️⛄

We never did get enough #Snow for snow ice cream! But visiting with the sledders across the street has been fun. I'm hoping we'll get enough snow for #SnowIceCream some time this winter! ❄️

Sleet/ice/snow today. There wasn't enough snow for snow ice cream, but I did go outside and talk to the sledders a little while. #WintryMix #Sledders

"Experts on the formation of internal security services in authoritarian regimes point to a sense of impunity as a warning sign. Regime officials abuse their power when they know they will be protected, and even praised, for doing so."

Very clarifying.
New, from me: Defenders of police abuses will sometimes talk about “bad apples” spoiling the barrel.

This is the wrong metaphor for ICE and CBP. The barrel itself is rotten. 🧵

49 degrees and cloudy. According to the phone app, the low tomorrow is supposed to be 28 F. And there's a chance of sleet. If the weather is going to be all wintry mix, I wish it would snow! ❄️
January 23, 2026 at 3:21 PM
If there's a winter weather advisory in your area or will be soon, be sure to have non-perishable food, water, flashlights w/ good batteries, blankets....And keep your phones charged. Here we've more of a chance of ice and sleet than snow, but some snow would be nice too! ⛄❄️

The pic I'm currently using for my banner pic/profile pic is one I took on the way to the American Short Story final exam in May 1985. Sometimes I'd carry my camera in my backpack and take pics of the beautiful flowers and trees on campus. It's #35mmFilm.

Anyone watch "Death in Paradise"? Here via PBS we've seen two episodes of the first season with DI Wilson. Seb reminds me of Ruby as per enthusiasm. Darlene and Naomi are totally LOL in their reactions to DI Wilson, and the DI himself reminds me of DI Poole as per his reactions to the island.
