Touhou ofc is the biggest example I can give since the 'fan'base ended up turning the IP into a multimedia empire and turning the games into smug copies of other games over time likely partly because the original slop gave them motion sickness as Japanese Spyro and @acespark.bsky.social can attest

Funny aside how fucking Working Designs had to make it so that you had to beat their localized PS1 ports of RayStorm and Thunder Force V on normal mode at a minimum without being locked up to like Stage 4 otherwise and also forced limited continues for RayStorm even if it added like too many still

Also I'm willing to bet that the Japanese don't really care about STGs at all, especially the "on the spot continue" kind, partily to some extent because of motion sickness. Somebody tried putting TH5 Shinki on a Rockslop contest and here and this is what @acespark.bsky.social had to say about it

I'm pretty sure that Seiga bitch ZUN flanderized to make world's biggest mary sue Kasen look good in comparison looks like the current ZUNTATA avatar because ZUN was and is still coping from not making it big there instead of making STGs for people who hate STGs like the rest of Japan these days

I wonder if the prominence of co-op play put a wrench on that mentality in JP arcades, considering how checkpoint systems are incompatible with co-op play and that arcade games usually provoke you to join an ongoing game right ten without having to wait for the guy to end their session beforehand

The problem here is that approaching such works like Druaga and early communal-focused Famislop nowadays has the issue of people knowing all the answers so your options are either slog it through alone or just watch and/or copy a replay to success instead which is basically Billy Mitchell pilled
