Ice cellars – or siqlugaq, in Yup'ik – are underground caches that Indigenous peoples in the Arctic have been using for thousands of years to store food. But as the Arctic warms, the practice is changing.
As the Arctic warms, residents and researchers look for ways to keep using traditional ice cellars
Permafrost thaw and erosion have been causing some of the ice cellars in Alaska to collapse or flood.

ARCUS was important. It jumpstarted careers in science. It amplified voices that have too long been left out of research. It did all that and more for very little money, and now it's gone, arguably when we need it most.

Sometime around the turn of the 20th century, the sea mink disappeared from Maine's coastal waters. Its loss came during a rush of North American extinctions, but many today have never even heard of it.

It might be among the first mammals to go extinct in North America after colonization. But can scientists prove it was even a distinct species?

We're not going anywhere.
