I’m on vacation at my family’s summer home in #Newfoundland this week. Yesterday’s highlight was exploring resettled communities in Fortune Bay. What remains are meaningful time capsules of Anderson’s Cove and Stone’s Cove.

Today I missed my planned workout because of a rescheduled meeting and an important dr appointment with a kid.

Then I had a few drinks and watched the final episodes of Handmaid’s Tale and my Fitbit thinks my heart rate took a brisk walk. That’s good enough for me!

The pomp and circumstance of the throne speech is fascinating. Also - I'm not sure I realized the throne speech is delivered from a seated position (on a throne) - duh.

Right?!
Hey, @cbcnews-rss.bsky.social? Do you really need to give national air time to coverage of ridings where less than 100 votes have been counted? Saying a riding is leaning one way based on less than 1% of the vote is crazy.

Our oldest voted at advanced polls in #Guelph #Canada this weekend and when the workers confirmed it was her first election they yelled “first-time voter” and everyone applauded. It was adorable.

I didn’t realize how many teens I follow on other platforms until they all posted about the new #IceBucketChallenge in the last 48 hours.

Cracked it! What a feeling when you finally come up with the lead, “the way in,” for a tough story. It feels like the rest of the article can just fall into place now. #amwriting #sciencewriting

“This is the humanity in sciences. I never trained to become political or a social activist, but sometimes life forces you to be one.”

I loved meeting and writing about Encieh Erfani, recipient of the AAAS Award for Scientific Freedom and Responsibility.

I just went to the kitchen to make tea but while I was waiting for the kettle to boil I also poured a glass of wine. I guess you could say it’s a pretty good evening.

We used to think our #lovebird was bad at building nests, but now I see she’s been building camouflage all along.

The roads were too rough to drive to the conservation area after another snow dump, so today’s pivot was a snowshoe downtown Guelph with my son. We felt so proudly Canadian by the time we reached the pub! 🇨🇦

Finished Intermezzo by Sally Rooney over the weekend.

I find her books so fresh and different. Glad to have held onto this one for a January read. #booksky

We have 6 surprise houseguests (including our kid) after they got evacuated from residence at University of Waterloo today. The boilers have blown and six buildings had to be cleared out for at least 72 hours.

This morning I spilled a protein drink over the backseat of my car, and when I got to the gym I realized I forgot shoes. So that’s how wellness in 2025 is going so far.

Out driving with my 16 yo through quiet side streets after she has her 2nd driving lesson. She got a honk when she hesitated on a right turn, and the guy was so outraged that he rolled down his window and yelled, “learn to drive!” Keep it classy, #Guelph, and please be patient.

We’re hosting an annual party in a few days, but tonight we’re eating ‘party food’ just for our family of 5. I’m hoping that by letting them have free rein on special foods now, 3 teens won’t attack it so vigorously when I put out a lot of the same stuff for guests. At least, that’s the logic!

Oprah has a new podcast about books! And the first episode is with Claire Keegan, the writiest writer to interview! I love how she describes stories that want to be written like the wet, persistent noses of dogs who want to go for a walk.
