I write historical fiction, and I'm pretty good at it. My novels include:

Zulu - amzn.to/2LrC45m

Middle - amzn.to/2NmicB6

Some days I don't even blink at spelling Massachusetts correctly first time every time. Other days? Other days I don't just want there to be an extra e in there. I NEED there to be an extra e in there. I'll rage against the spellcheck. It's Massachusettes, damn it!

Today is one of those other days.

My dog will go as fast as she can as hard as she can until she's burned up every ounce of energy she has to give; then she goes and lies down, utterly spent. The dividing line between the two states? She actually takes an honest-to-god water break. She's a sprinter from a long line of racing dogs...

My wife sent me a video advertising the features of a new couch. (Yes, we lead tremendously exciting lives.) After I watched it, she wanted to talk about how roomy it looked. I had to break it to her models they hired were an Asian couple. The man was ~5'2" with an even shorter wife. I'm 6'3"...

Doing some minor repair work around the house. Used some gorilla glue. Promptly got some on the ball of my thumb.

There are worse places to get it. (The package specifically warns about eyelids...) The ball of the thumb is still a really not cool place to have something instantly bond to your skin.

When I was young, I had an uncle with a collapsible dolly in the back of his van. It was so useful for moving heavy stuff. Now as an adult, I too have a collapsible dolly. I keep it in my storage locker, and every time I bust it out, I think of my late uncle. What a strange mental association...

The older I get, the more I get the whole 'Muzak' thing we all hated back in the 1980s and 1990s. I'm puttering away at something that I need to concentrate on, but I wanted some vaguely familiar pleasant background music. I'm listening to bossa nova covers of pop hits. It's pretty damned good!

I don't have the numbers in front of me, and I don't need them. Some things work on feel alone. Today boasts the coldest morning so far this winter. The snow creaked underfoot rather than crunched, and my face felt stiff when I came back from taking the dog for her 5-minute bathroom break of a walk.

100% they should bring back intermissions. I'm not sure why they ever stopped. Theatres don't want audiences to have a second crack at the concession stands halfway through the show? Isn't that where all their profit margins are made?
As others are pointing out, movies aren't really getting longer overall -- it's just that all the long ones are opening at the same time these days, for awards season. The real solution is to bring back intermissions, and let theater owners enjoy the profit of popcorn and soda sales.
Make films shorter if you want them shown in cinemas, says Picturehouse director
Clare Binns says three-hour runtimes deter audiences as she is named Bafta recipient for outstanding British contribution to cinema

For Season Two Episode Two of The Tape Recorder Trilogy Podcast —a free weekly audio drama I am creating based on three of my novels— we hear our Narrator was taken in by the royal women of Tyre as a kind of private guardian angel.

There's a blow-up happening in the Reddit zeitgeist today. 2016 is now ten years ago. Should we look back on it fondly? Opinions seem to be divided based on age. 'The young people' (he says, very conscious he no longer qualifies) remember 2016 as a great time. Everyone else says it was a trainwreck.

Talked to a Somali man today who said his mosque last night was surrounded by neighbors ready to protect them against ICE if needed. Made me feel proud to live in this city.

Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

It's crazy that the hypothetical, "What is the biggest animal that you think you could take in a fight?" Makes me down tools and really think.

I don't want to lie or brag, and I also don't want to leave something impressive on the table.

Honestly, I put less thought into truly important matters.

I'll say it. My wife is a bigger sports fan than I am. We watch A LOT of sports.

That said, I'm able to watch the end of games without peeking between the fingers I've thrown dramatically over my eyes in a gesture of passion and woe, so, point for me, I guess?

I just watched 'The Russian Five' hockey documentary about the Russians who played for the Red Wings in the 1990s. I've long been aware of the divide between pronouncing Detroit as 'Det-royt' versus 'Det-royut,' but I'm now confident the distinction is between generations rather than geographies.

I know it's a white nightmare for commuters, but this all-day blizzard sure is pretty from the inside looking out through windows whose sills are gently filling up with snow like something out of a damned postcard...

My wife and I have an ongoing disagreement over the wording of future plans.

I say, "If we are busy this Friday, next Friday is two Fridays from now."

She says, "If we are busy this Friday, the following Friday is 'Friday,' and the Friday three Fridays from now is 'Next Friday.' "

Madness!

There's an ad campaign on TikTok I'm sure the algorithm is pointing at straight men. Guys earnestly & enthusiastically pitch me a Valentine's Day card where a bouquet of paper flowers will appear when my wife opens it up.

Super-effective ads, but how much do these cards cost to afford the ad blitz?

A confession? When a page count or inventory metric or some other integer sequence moves through the range 1790ish to 2020ish, I enjoy equating the number to something that happened in history the corresponding year. I am then a little sad when the numbers progress past that range into 'the future.'

Barista is gender neutral, right?

A male barista isn't a baristo or a barister or anything like that, right?

Mom is visiting this weekend. She wants to go skating with me at an outdoor rink. I've just Googled outdoor rinks in my new-ish neighbourhood. There are several in our area with schedules neatly divided between leisure skating and shinny. Shinny! (That's pickup hockey, if you didn't know.)

I have been earning a living writing and copy-editing for 20+ years.

I always struggle with whether to capitalize after a colon or not, and I've just figured out why.

You do in coding. You don't always in English grammar. I was taught both in different classes in the same semesters of high school.
