Glad to live in a state and region with robust waste water tracking. Unfortunately what it's showing is the highest level of coronavirus gene copies per person since NC started tracking in January 2021. This is the Durham chart but Chapel Hill is close behind.

Happy back to school?

Really baffled by this paper. ACE2 KO cells with high virus titer. Claiming a new receptor but the inhibitor has minimal ability to block replication. Am I missing something great about this data?

Good news about flu vaccine effectiveness this year! Which is good because there is SO MUCH respiratory crud going around. (NC numbers from yesterday, check out the big increase in flu hospitalizations sky high wastewater level for SARS2.)

Grad school interviews start soon! This paper is a good reference on what to expect and how to prepare. You should be ready to discuss your research interests, your research - what you did AND overall significance, and why that school/program interests you. journals.physiology.org/doi/full/10....

Heading to the Keystone meeting on Long COVID today! It was an early start but I remembered my CO2 monitor. We had an older AA plane from RDU to Dallas and the air quality was not good, even at altitude. I needed to eat but put my mask back on between bites of breakfast ☹️

McGavran is an old building but the air handling is better than I expected. This is the CO2 level halfway through our class of 11 people in a pretty small room.

Getting rid of our awful hedges, ground cover and invasive plants today with Native Plants Matter NC!
August 24, 2023 at 3:34 PM
Wastewater monitoring is up for the 8th straight week here in NC and now COVID hospitalizations are also increasing. Despite talk of preparing for a surge in winter infections, late summer continues to be a high risk time in the south.
