New in PN: The slide toward "competitive authoritarianism"

"Orbán subverted Hungary’s democracy with gerrymandering and by creating a nationwide right-wing media network. He put loyalists in the public prosecutor’s office, ensuring the judicial system would go after his enemies. Sound familiar?"
"Competitive authoritarianism" and America's slide toward it

@morningjoe-msnbc.bsky.social while you were busy spending 4 hours on DC and Trump Ghislaine was being given work release.

Did @morningjoe-msnbc.bsky.social spend the entire morning on Trump bringing the National Guard to DC? I turned to CNN but kept checking back to get my Willie fix and they were still on it. This show has become just replaying the same segments over and over.

I want to tell you why the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia should matter to you.

The one power you cannot give the executive is the ability to imprison or expel anyone regardless of their legal rights. That is our key check against autocracy. And we are watching it disappear.

@theweekendmsnbc.bsky.social that upstate NY community is a huge Trump territory too. The entire community came out to fight for this family.

@clairecmc.bsky.social NY 21 is a problem for the GOP because of the infighting w/in the GOP and Anthony Constantino (Sticker Mule CEO). He insists none of the other candidates are trumpy enough. If he didn’t get the nomination he was running as an independent. He has signs all over.

Is it me? Am I just crazy? It certainly looks like they are taking turns babysitting Hegseth. First his wife is in meetings and then he has his brother traveling with him and now he has hired him. Seems fishy.

Elise Stefanik is taking friendly fire from the infighting in #ny21. I have a weekend house in Mayfield NY in her district. This is SOLID Trump country. They compete on their Trumpiness. The NYGOP picked Stec (a huge Trumper). the weekend these rumors started to fly Sticker Mule owner put up signs

@neeratanden.bsky.social When the NY GOP didn’t gift Anthony Constantino the spot the Trump administration got worried. Fulton/Montgomery County has huge signs at every intersection “Constantino for Congress” those people would have stayed home. That’s a problem because they are all about themselves

Do I have this right? Elon Musk - the guy in charge of preventing wasteful spending - dropped $40M on a Super Bowl ad?

We could permanently house 800 homeless veterans for $40M. Or provide five million meals to the hungry. Or replace lead pipes in 8,500 homes.
