Do voters strategically attempt to affect the identity of the next prime minister?
In a new paper at @ejprjournal.bsky.social, we show they do!
Using @cses.bsky.social and German surveys, we find when and how "formateur optimization" is more likely to occur

My 12yo in the protests today, calling for a deal for the release of the hostages and ending the war in Gaza. I'm so proud of her.

Yesterday I presented a new paper with Maria Grasso and @rosieshorrocks.bsky.social at #EPSA25 in the beautiful (and hot) city of Madrid.
Great panel, lovely place, and nice people around.
See you next year at EPSS!

Back to London after four days full of inspiring discussions on gender and generational gaps (and lots of coffee...)
Thank you to all the participants! It's been a pleasure directing this workshop 🤓

Party switching is one of the most impactful things MKs do, sometimes reshaping Israeli politics (hi Idit Silman).
Csaba Nikolenyi's book dives into this fascinating topic, and I had the pleasure of reviewing it for Israel Studies Review.

מאמר חדש בספר ה"בחירות בישראל" עם @yanivshapi.bsky.social @ayakter.bsky.social

🔔New paper on party surrogation!
What does it mean to feel represented by a party you didn’t vote for?
In Party Politics with Liron Lavi, we explore the concept of Party Surrogation through a cross-country and individual-level analysis using @cses.bsky.social

Is this a demographic shift? No, the generational gap is evident among secular Israelis as well, indicating a broad trend affecting all sectors.

Important: These are cohort effects rather than lifecycle effects, suggesting they may persist and influence Israeli public opinion long-term through generational replacement.

Key finding: Young Israeli Jews have significantly lower support for a Palestinian state and identify as right-wing more than older cohorts

There are intriguing nuances to note. For instance, self-interest emerges as a top priority for everyone, Leftists and Rightists, and there's a unanimous preference for policies that involve coordination with the Palestinians rather than unilateral actions. >>

And does their perception of the COVID threat play a role in shaping these views?

A new paper online! At the onset of the COVID outbreak, there was a sense that the world was transforming significantly. @ayakter.bsky.social and I wondered: Could the pandemic influence the dynamics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? >>
