A new report from @lionessjiwa.bsky.social and @txcivilrights.bsky.social reveals the systemic neglect of reproductive and women’s healthcare in Texas prisons and jails. Nearly 200 incarcerated women reported a lack of access to medical care, menstrual supplies, and dehumanizing treatment by staff.

Last week, Rep. Josey Garcia honored Lioness and other powerful advocacy groups on the House floor for our work in Bexar County. Angel, Destiny and Lori stood not as just survivors of the system but as changemakers! 🔥

The Texas House passed Friday a measure requiring prisons to have air conditioning by the end of 2032.

The bill will now face its last hurdle in the state Senate.

Chanel Jones, our Director of Programming, reminds us that true second chances mean leaving judgment at the door.

Too many employers and landlords offer "second chances" while still holding past incarceration against people trying to rebuild their lives.
We’re fighting to change that.

About 1 in 12 youth held for a criminal or delinquent offense is locked in an adult jail or prison, and most of the others are held in juvenile facilities that look and operate a lot like prisons and jails.

The carceral system is not a place for children.

As organizational plaintiffs we remain hopeful that legislators will allocate the funding needed this session to bring relief to incarcerated people and staff in Texas prisons.
About two-thirds of Texas prisons are not fully air conditioned, and dozens of inmates have died in the sweltering heat.

At least five bills have been filed this legislative session that would require state prisons to be equipped with air conditioning, but none have received a hearing yet.
Federal judge rules prison heat conditions are unconstitutional, but doesn’t require air conditioning

Breaking: A federal judge ruled that housing Texas prison inmates in sweltering facilities that lack air conditioning is unconstitutional, but declined to order the Texas Department of Justice to immediately install temporary or permanent air conditioning.

Celebrating #WomensHistoryMonth & political power! Historically, women have created community-based solutions that improve our lives. Often, these solutions ensure that all voices are reflected in decision making. Leaders like @replsimon.bsky.social are making a safe and just democracy possible.

Our inside member Xandan Gulley describes the use of tasers on people incarcerated in women's facilities. A must read!
Dispatch from the inside: A prisoner in solitary watches as guards use Tasers on a naked, mentally-ill woman in a shower, and reflects on their increasingly brutal use in the Texas correctional system.
