A new report from @lionessjiwa.bsky.social and @txcivilrights.bsky.social reveals the systemic neglect of reproductive and women’s healthcare in Texas prisons and jails. Nearly 200 incarcerated women reported a lack of access to medical care, menstrual supplies, and dehumanizing treatment by staff.

The Texas House passed Friday a measure requiring prisons to have air conditioning by the end of 2032.

About 1 in 12 youth held for a criminal or delinquent offense is locked in an adult jail or prison, and most of the others are held in juvenile facilities that look and operate a lot like prisons and jails.

As organizational plaintiffs we remain hopeful that legislators will allocate the funding needed this session to bring relief to incarcerated people and staff in Texas prisons.
About two-thirds of Texas prisons are not fully air conditioned, and dozens of inmates have died in the sweltering heat.
At least five bills have been filed this legislative session that would require state prisons to be equipped with air conditioning, but none have received a hearing yet.
