This bird, which is rare for the Bay Area, was spotted in last year's Christmas Bird Count. No one has seen it for 7 weeks, and a lot of folks have looked. And then it just showed up in the same spot 2 days ago.

All probationary federal employees at NOAA’s EMC that’s responsible for keeping all US weather model systems running have been fired with 1 hours notice. And that includes me and colleagues. We will not go quietly because we care about the NOAA mission to protect the public.

U.S. initial unemployment claims rose 22,000 to 242,000, exceeding expectations. Layoffs at Starbucks, Meta, and Southwest Airlines, plus federal job cuts, contributed. D.C. claims hit 2,047, the highest since 2023. Pantheon estimates DOGE layoffs added 5,000 claims, though overall cuts remain small
