Noirvember 6: The Big Heat! Man, I love this movie. The dialogue is so good, and it just whips right along. Everyone is giving a great performance, and there are so many satisfying setups and payoffs. I love a noir with an investigating protagonist who is struggling against corruption. 10/10

Noirvember 5: Gun Crazy (1950, Joseph H. Lewis). Really solid movie! The camerawork during the driving sequences was quite impressive.

Noirvember 4: The Long Goodbye (1973, Altman) -- woof, this one did NOT work for me. I like Gould, I liked this well enough until the scene where Marlowe and the writer drink together, but it was all meandering downhill after that. Lots of very intentional choices that felt meaningless.

Movies 2 & 3 for Noirvember: Devil in a Blue Dress (Franklin, 1995) and Leave Her to Heaven (Stahl, 1945). Both are okay and have cool moments. Washington and Turner are both great. But DiaBD's voiceover detracts, and the courtroom scene in LHtH is unfortunately laughable. Worth watching though!

First movie up for Noirvember: Machine Gun Kelly (Corman, 1958). My first Roger Corman film and like the third or fourth Bronson I've seen this year, after having never seen any of his films. This one has some surprising character work that kept me interested and a couple of quite good lines.

I'd like to present the lady catnip-fiend, Bela Lugosi, aka Bela, Bellybear, Bela J. Bear, Beelzebub, Beelzy, Lil Bub, Lil Buddy.

Katabasis is great! Honestly, 10/10, and I can even forgive Kuang for redeeming a character who I knew a version of in grad school (and who didn't turn out to be nearly so nice). An academic commentary that cuts to the bone, maybe especially if you're post-ac, with room for hope.

An Ikiru remake that starts well but ends heavy-handed and saccharine; a classic that holds up pretty well; a confused disappointment; and a grim must-watch with so many moments that resonate with our current fascist moment.

Sinners was so fun! The big set piece song performance was, in my mind, the kind of thing cinema is meant for. Overall, it struck the right balance of scares and tunes, and every time I thought there would be a moment to catch my breath, the film would plunge ahead, which kept up the tension.

Maybe I've just known too many guys like the one in Fair Play, but I read that ending totally opposite to the director's intent -- he's not sorry, and he's definitely going to hurt her, and maybe worse, with that knife she just dropped. Excellent tension, but it lost me with that ending.

A film that takes place where you're from.

(There's not a lot to pick from for my home state, but this movie is great!)

Canceled TV show that you will never stop thinking about.

Bless @thejenna.bsky.social and her Big Game Hunger podcast for talking again about my dumb prompt word "borborygmic," which relates to tummy rumbling noises. If you love video games, this podcast is a delight.

Sorry To Bother You (2018, Boots Riley) really fuckin slaps. What a great movie -- awesome visuals, great performances and script. I saw it in 2018 and have been thinking about it ever since, and it's a great rewatch for our current times.

Wow -- what a final speech. Sad that it's so incredibly relevant here today.

Had a blast watching this in the theater today -- the rom com angle is sweet and works well, and it's a fun slasher too. The gore effects are very cool, and the Foley is incredible. Get out to see this!

Companion is one hell of a fun (and twisted) time. Good script, good casting and performances, and good effects. I'm so glad I got to see it in the theater!

New North and South edition drops in May! Featuring what I know is going to be a very smart and fascinating afterword convo between my good friend, and N&S expert, Adrienne Garcia-Specht and Morgan Spector (yes, from The Gilded Age and Broadway and etc.).

Hmm -- I don't have a scrollbar. I wonder if it's a mobile issue or an Android issue.

It was a good day to watch JoJo Rabbit. Good performances. Smart script and dialogue.

When everything is dire, you do what you can.

If you like true crime, and/or have conflicted feelings about or are suspicious of true crime, I highly recommend I Have Some Questions For You by Rebecca Makkai. The novel is very clear-eyed and meta about the genre. There is also some fun 90s nostalgia amid the intrigue and trauma.

I'd love to hear about films that folks watched for the first time this year that really struck them (delighted, destroyed, shook, etc.). Not necessarily new -- just new to you. Here are mine:
