Genuinely pretty appalled this got published. (Don’t bother with your savvy remark about how nobody should be surprised.)
As the emails stretch through the years, they show how that protected realm vanished into the mists of time, pulled under by the rising forces of the internet and the #MeToo movement. Mr. Epstein and some of his male correspondents seem to squirm as they notice society changing around them.

When you write the whole piece around the idea of “MeToo” as an adequate description of what caused specific men to lose specific positions, and when you do this incredibly weird cutesy business to avoid *mentioning what happened*, you do a disservice to readers.
The cache of emails includes exchanges about going to dinner at Rao's, the uptown Italian restaurant where it was famously hard to get a table, and an invitation for Mr. Epstein to the 25th anniversary party for The New York Observer (it was a weekly paper, printed on salmon-colored newsprint and read by the city's elite) at the Four Seasons restaurant (where the elite once power-lunched; it's now closed) co-hosted by Michael Bloomberg (he was the mayor) and Jared Kushner (who owned The Observer). The guest list included Matt Lauer and Harvey Weinstein. You've probably heard about what happened with them.

In other words: Everybody who reads romance has seen this shit.
Yet there was no reading. The book in question was subtly placed near the restaurant's entrance and by the sofas. And were you to catch a glimpse of the cover, you'd never know it was a romance novel at all.

I’ll say this much: This reads exactly like what it is: people who discovered romance five years ago and decided they had all kinds of amazing new ideas to “fix” it. Connections between books? That feel kind of cozy to the reader? How did no one ever think of that?? www.nytimes.com/2025/11/13/b...
Publishers don't usually offer such ways to extend the story, leaving readers with what Mazur called "a book hangover," only partially cured via online discussion groups and fan fiction. 831 Stories wants to build in that kind of obsessiveness from the start. "We really want romance readers to want to collect all the books, to want to have an understanding of the entire set of characters, to understand the Easter egg in Book No. 8 that references Book No. 2," Cerulo said.

I wrote this about THE GOOD PLACE finale, but I now realize it also sums up my revulsion about the basic anti-humanity of AI avatars of the dead:
But I understood its final philosophical stance perfectly. Fragility and preciousness are not paired out of some regrettable irony; they are reliant on each other. It's because we know our time with people will end that we can find ourselves flooded with gratitude for their presence. The friction of our limitations is what necessitates effort (of all kinds), and effort - rewarded and not - is where we find meaning. Surround yourself with friends who love you and love them deeply, and you will grow. It's worth applying every part of yourself, including your intellect, to the question of how to do the right thing.
