After the war, Walter created the United Negro Allied Veterans Association to agitate for pensions. He also continued to organize with the CPUSA until he split from the party in 1952. He worked as Paul Robeson’s bodyguard before he passed on January 7, 1974.

Walter Garland was stationed in Staten Island and upstate New York. He also taught map-making and gave lectures on his role in the Brunete campaign. His multiple requests for combat duty were denied, as was the case for hundreds of ALB vets.

In 1938, Walter lobbied Congress and ran for the NY-17 seat. In 1941 the FBI classified Garland an "individual believed to be the most dangerous & who in all probability should be interned in event of war". Initially denied re-enlistment, he served in the US Army military police & as an instructor.

Walter arrived in Spain on January 10, 1937 and served with ALB and was promoted to command a machine-gun company. He was WIA at Jarama and Brunete. He returned to the US on November 9, 1937 and continued to support ALB through speaking tours and fundraising events (see article by Richard Wright).

He later served in US Army, 7th Cavalry during WWII and was an advisor to the Greek Partisans. George married Miriam Plato in 1942. He worked in construction by 1950 and passed on June 10, 1990.

George served at Quinto, Belchite, Fuentes de Ebro, Segura, Retreats, and Ebro Offensive. He was WIA in the thigh by a sniper in the church tower at Belchite, hospitalized for frostbite at Teruel, and WIA at Corbera by a bomb concussion. He survived and returned to the US on Dec. 20, 1938.

Hy Rosner served with ALB as an ambulance driver at Jarama until he was WIA during a fascist bombing. He returned to the US on October 16, 1937. He served in the Merchant Marines during WWII until his convoy was bombed in 1943. He lost a leg and was hospitalized for a year. He died on May 14, 1994.

Franklin was WIA during the Retreats around Batea and KIA between March 30-April 3, 1938 in Gandesa, after only three months in Spain. He was 37. He was married when he went to Spain, but the name of his wife is not yet known.

Anthony returned to the US on October 16, 1937. He worked as a musker before he served during WWII. He passed on August 7, 1998.

Arthur also created Camelot Publishing, producing fantasy magazines Coven 13 and Witchcraft & Sorcery. He also wrote a fantasy trilogy called Camelot, published from 1976-1981. He published his last novel, Home To Avalon, in 1982. Arthur passed on Jan. 27, 1986.

After the war he married Ruth Jurow & worked for her father. By the mid-1960s, Arthur became an author. In 1967, he published The Abraham Lincoln Brigade based on interviews with volunteers, republished as Death in the Olive Groves in 1986. In 1973, Arthur published Spain! Our Unfinished Revolution.

Arthur participated in an abortive operation to blow up the Italian Fleet headquarters. He also helped secure the 15th International Brigade Archives aboard a Soviet Ship. He returned to the US on December 20, 1938.

Sadly, Leon was killed in February 1938 on the Extremadura Front at the age of 25.

John joined the Spanish CP in 1939. He was in Tangier before he returned to the US on April 17, 1940.

John arrived in Spain on February 14, 1937, crossing the French border by bus. He served with ALB at Jarama, Brunete, Aragon, Levante, and Teruel. He was shot in the foot at Quinto on August 24, 1937 and spent 4 months recovering. He then served with the 4th Group, 35th Battery.

Evelyn continued to work as a nurse in California. More research is needed about her politics and her life post-Spain.

She passed on August 16, 1998 at the age of 90. She is buried in Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery, San Rafael, California.
