George Kaye was born #otd in NYC, 1917. He attended LA Junior College and was a member of ROTC. He worked as a truck driver, clerk and union organizer. He was a member of the YCL and CPUSA. He arrived in Spain on April 10, 1937 after he was briefly arrested in France.

Hyman Rosner was born #otd in Philadelphia, 1903. He dropped out of high school at 16 and became a sailor. He was also a semi professional handball player, earning money in local matches. He was an organizer with the NMU and the CPUSA. He sailed for Spain on January 6, 1937.

Franklin Lee Watkins was born in November, 1901 in Philadelphia, PA. He worked as a transportation engineer and unlike many ALB volunteers, was a member of the Socialist Party. He sailed to Spain late December 1937 and arrived in Spain early Jan. 1938. He served in the Lincoln-Washington Battalion.

Anthony Litvinas (left) was born #otd in Chicago, 1914 to a Lithuanian-American family. He attended high school in Lithuania and worked for the Lithuanian communist daily newspaper. He arrived in Spain on January 27, 1937 and served with ALB. He was WIA at Jarama and Brunete.

Arthur Harold Landis was born #otd in Birmingham, 1917. He worked as a cook and driver. He joined in the YCL in 1934.
He arrived in Spain on June 26, 1937 and served with ALB and the Mac Paps as a scout, topographer, artillery spotter, and commissar.

Leon Rosenthal was born #otd in Hartford, Connecticut in 1912. Leon worked as a mechanic and joined the YCL in 1935. He married Lee Brohinsky on December 21, 1935 and arrived in Spain in May 27, 1937. He served with ALB and the 45th division. Leon worked in the sound truck with Samuel Grossner.

Fifty years ago, on November 20, 1975, Francisco Franco finally died, ending his 36-year reign of terror.

As Chevy Chase said: Francisco Franco is STILL DEAD. At ALBA we say, let's keep it that way! No Pasarán.

John Palu was born #otd in Kihnu, Estonia, in 1907. He served in the Estonian Army from 1928-1929 and immigrated to the US in 1930. He worked as a carpenter and construction worker, living in New York City. He was also a member of the Estonian Worker’s Club and an AFL union.

Evelyn Andell was born #otd in Brooklyn, 1907. She graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital in San Francisco by 1927 (see photograph). She arrived in Spain on February 5, 1938 and served with the AMB in Villa Paz, Barcelona, and Mataro hospitals.

Vernon Romayne Selby was born #otd in Rock Hall, Maryland. He attended a preparatory school for the Naval Academy. As a young adult he attended West Point but left after a sports injury. He became an engineer and spent time in Central America.

Harry Charles Moshier was born #otd in South Dakota, 1911. He worked as a driver, farmer and steel worker. He joined the CPUSA on July 15, 1937 and arrived in Spain on August 24, 1937. He served with ALB until he returned to the US on February 4, 1938.

Daniel Irving Haskell was born #otd in NYC, 1915. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps and as union organizer in a department store. He joined the YCL before he sailed for Spain on January 28, 1937.

Ned Golomb was born #otd in Brooklyn, 1912. He went to an agricultural college and worked as a farmer; he also served in the National Guard for three years. Ned joined the CPUSA in 1936 and arrived in Spain on February 14, 1937. He served with ALB in a variety of positions:

Today is Veterans Day in the USA, a holiday to honor military veterans. Here at ALBA, we honor the Lincolns who were some of the first to oppose the rise of fascism. After their heroic efforts in Spain, many would go on to join the US armed forces to fight fascism in WWII.

Wen-Rao Chen was born #otd in the Taishan District of China in 1913. He emigrated to the US as a teenager and attended high school in NYC. He worked in restaurants was active in the Chinese Workers’ Center in Chinatown. He joined the CP in 1933 and served as secretary of the Anti-Imperialist League.

James Clinton Barnett was born #otd in 1908 in Trafalgar, Indiana. James attended Franklin College and was an NCO in the US Marine Corps until 1935. He worked as a printer and seaman. He sailed to Spain in May 1937 and served in the John Brown Battery. He returned to the US on Feb. 4, 1939.

Marcus Alper was born #otd in Newark, NJ, in 1910. He attended Brown University, graduating in 1933. In 1937 he paid his own way to Spain, arriving in February. He worked as a scout and gunner, and served on the Cordoba front, at Fuentes de Ebro, and Teruel. He returned to the US in December 1938.

Herman Greenfield was born #otd in Brooklyn, 1915. He attended CCNY and was a food worker for fur dryers. He organized with the YCL and CPUSA. He arrived in Spain on May 30, 1937. He served with ALB and the Mac Paps. Herman was KIA in February 1938.

Edythe Mae Dyer was born #otd in Girardville, PA, in 1907. She was trained in nursing at St. Luke's Medical center in 1931 and worked as a nurse before she arrived in Spain on July 12, 1937. Edythe served with the Republican Medical Service in the 9th AMB group at Villa Paz and Mataro.

ALBA remembers George Watt, born #otd in NYC, 1913. He attended Brooklyn College and Cooper Union and joined the YCL in 1932. George arrived in Spain on Aug. 6, 1937. He served with ALB as party secretary and battalion commissar. He was WIA at Ebro but returned to the US on Dec. 20, 1938.

Today we remember Carlos Roel Jimenez, born #otd in Monterrey, Mexico, in 1904. His family came to the US in 1915 and Carlos naturalized. He served in the National Guard for 3 years and worked as a metal worker in a tin mill. He was living in PA before he went to Spain, arriving on Feb. 11, 1937.

Mendel Milton Goldstein was born #otd in 1915 in NYC and lived in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Milton joined the Communist Party in 1933 and sailed to Spain in February 1937. He served with the ALB as Asst. Squad Commander in Jarama and Cordoba. After an injury, Milt worked in the rear as an artist.

Martin Joseph Grumet was born #otd in Pittsburgh, PA in 1914. He worked as an auto mechanic and joined the CPUSA in 1933. He lived in Detroit before he arrived in Spain on July 31, 1937. Martin served in the Auto Park until he returned to the US a week before his 24th birthday on October 25, 1938.

Sidney Rosenblatt was born #otd in NYC, 1915. He worked odd jobs, including as a teacher. He joined the Young Communist League in 1934 and went to Spain on June 21, 1937. Sidney served with ALB and the Mac Paps as a clerk. He was captured while aiding his mortally wounded Commander David Reiss.

William John Tatham was born #otd in Walhalla, SC, 1908. He worked as a sailor and miner. He joined the CPUSA, ISU, and NMU before he arrived in Spain on September 14, 1937. He served with ALB as a machine gunner in Teruel, Segura de los Baños, Retreats (Caspe, Belchite, Gandesa), & Ebro Offensive.
