We don't want this, we just don't have the power to fix it unless EVERYONE is working together on that. And we've been taught all our lives that protests that inconvenience people are Morally Wrong.

We're not evil. We're terrified and isolated and disenfranchised in the extreme.

We're starving, sick and cannot take time off work without losing our food, homes, or healthcare. It's de facto legal for our government to imprison/kill us for protesting, and our news networks are run for profit, not dissemination of information. Our legislators choose who gets to vote for whom.

I just posted this as a standalone post but thought I'd post it as a reply here too.

Does "No social media can do human moderation at scale" mean it's impossible, or just that it's not profitable?

Is every public square on the internet operating on such razor-thin margins that they can't afford the kinds of moderation we were using ten or fifteen years ago?

All of that together makes it seem like the moderators are just a spot-checker or beta tester, and the AI is the one setting the policy. The humans are just playing catchup.

I'm very confident this isn't the way internet companies used to do things. We can talk about why, but denying it's possible?

That's to say nothing of the fact that these moderation actions are coming days or weeks after the content is posted, or the fact that "review by moderators" always includes the disclaimer that "we do not control the algorithm" and "we have corrected the problem for this image already."

Genuinely, every fucking social website has had a "Whoops! Our untested AI moderator system flagged something that wasn't against the rules and which never should have been blocked, and letting it do so made the community less safe!" moment by now.

Why are they still trying to use them?

Before zooming in on the image, I was deeply concerned that this woman did not have a buttcrack. I wondered if it had in fact been stolen. Is this the kind of abnormal sexual behavior presented, I asked myself. Buttlessness.

How come people only ever say "You cannot do it all" and "Pick your battles" when they're expressing how every battle you care about is unwinnable?
