Fluvial ecologist focused on restoring montane tributary systems; now focused on protecting all of these efforts from unraveling with the incoming Whitehouse infestation. Overly empathetic and dig the acoustic music of Neil Young, Jay Farrar, and the like

As Trump world falls apart around us, we’re doing our best to provide habitat and water storage in mountain tributary streams.

Another day in the forest! Must be getting closer to field season. Visited some BDA sites installed in 2023, seem to be functioning as hoped. Yay. #BDA #LTPBR

Spent this beautiful day doing recon on small wood supplementation test sites and restoration prep for this field season. Secured fire wise thinned wood for instream structures. #LTPBR #BDA #PALS.

Tried my hand at cartooning today. When friends try to normalize themselves and their crazy thinking. This is the image that always comes to mind. Finally tried to lay it out on paper.

I’m an ecologist, Jim, I’m not a cartoonist!

Relative elevation models and Flood models and LiDAR, OH MY! Designing Low-Tech Process-Based Restoration (LTPBR) to help a small trib find its way to the floodplain again (years of railroad logging hurt these poor little fellers). BDAs, PALS and loose small diameter wood to the rescue.

A model floodplain. Still degraded and recovering from human modification, but it’s the beavers work that is turning the tide. (Disclaimer: it’s not known if they obtained their 404)

Sometimes one needs to just step away from streams for a while. Not too long… but for a while. There’s beauty beyond the channels, too, it seems. :)

Small wood for small streams. Intercepted from a contracted, shaded fuel break thin operation. Fully permitted. Hand hauling… beats a gym membership and smalls better than the gym too.

Meet the most kickass tributary monitoring team ever formed. We’re diving in to truly understand the effects of low-tech process-based restoration of tributary streams. At least, for those tribs of our basin.

Fluvial biogeomorph, for the win.

I can’t think of a better way to hold a stream restoration project’s tech advisory group meeting - why didn’t I think of this sooner??? Zoom is so … yesterday. Bring back the pool hall meetings!
