You know you’re deep into spider keeping when you walk by a neighbor’s trash can that’s shedding maggots and think “I should come back with a collection tube.”

As a kid, bugs were my first love, my first way to experience nature. They’re so varied and accessible! As I got older I focused more on larger animals and inverts fell by the wayside. Rediscovering my love of the littles is so cool as an adult. Feels like coming home.

It's hayfever season again so here's a reminder of my pro-tips for avoiding pollen as a plant ecologist who's allergic to the things I study at this time of year

Noticed springtails crawling on leftover cricket food so I threw it under the scope. I did not expect these guys to be so pretty! 😱 Some were iridescent. Lots of other cool stuff on there too. youtu.be/M14_ipf_uY0?...

Set this up for the spiders. As much as I enjoy having them on the kitchen table so I can watch while I’m eating, they were taking up a lot of space. 😆 Bookshelf + grow lights. Also got a seed sprouting warming mat for the tropical guys and slings.

Found this lovely lady with a huge badonkadonk in my yard. I'm told it's Sassacus vitis, (Buttonhook Leafbeetle Jumping Spider). Very small and looked dull brown until I put her under the microscope. Need ideas for a name, preferably something that revolves around her giant ass.

Got some new spiders yesterday from a friend who found many turning over stones. She said these are Phidippus johnsoni. First is a subadult female with fabulous lashes.

Recently had to fumigate for drywall termites. They were leaving crap like this on my daughter‘s desk for years but I had no idea what it was until someone told me. I thought they were spider poops. It’s a little wood pellets. The termites drop them from tiny nail-sized holes above.
