Edward Skeletrix— Skeletrix Language: idk man. i just don’t think there’s a there there.

can’t wait to inflict some Cinema on my long-suffering partners

Wednesday— I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone: The kind of record the descriptor “promising” was made for. It’s not fully there yet, but it’s easy to see the ingredients that would make them the incredible band they’d become.
November 6, 2025 at 8:58 PM
Trap Them— Sleepwell Deconstructor: Rarely has an album been so obviously produced by Kurt Ballou (not an insult)
October 25, 2025 at 8:53 PM
Bluetile Lounge— Half-Cut: Superlative slowcore that is among the most gorgeous the subgenre, not short on gorgeous records, has ever produced. The occasional Mogwai-like use of dynamics creates some awe-inspiring moments.

folks…it has arrived
October 18, 2025 at 9:39 PM
Oysterhead— The Grand Pecking Order: Not to sound like a 40 year old man but this album by the Primus / Phish / Police supergroup fucking rules (and it sounds exactly how you think it does)
October 18, 2025 at 9:36 PM
Shakti With John McLaughlin— Shakti: There are moments when McLaughlin’s virtuosic flurries of notes get in the way of his expressiveness, but on the whole this is pretty exceptional, a fusion of Indian classical music and jazz that never feels gimmicky or forced.
October 12, 2025 at 8:57 PM
Nifelheim— Nifelheim: The band says they hate when people say they’re tongue in cheek or unserious, but come on. Do you see that album art? There’s a song on here called “Witchfuck”. This shit is corny, whether intentionally or not, and it fucking rules because of that.
October 10, 2025 at 12:23 AM
Seiko Oomori— PINK: I think Seiko Oomori is a genius, and this is an under 20 minute testament as to why. A comparison might be something like Daniel Johnston, simple melodies delivered with perfect imperfection, the aesthetic trappings of “indie folk” too small to contain her.
October 9, 2025 at 10:49 PM
WatchTower— Control and Resistance: Have you ever wished Cynic was fronted by Bruce Dickinson? That’s a strange wish, but it turns out it whips ass, so I can’t judge you for it.
October 6, 2025 at 10:30 PM
D.R.I.— Dirty Rotten EP: 22 tracks in 17 minutes is perhaps the ideal thrashcore ratio, and this barely-controlled blur of muffled, grimy anger is pretty much the ideal thrashcore album.
October 3, 2025 at 10:46 PM
Ryu Hankil— Becoming Typewriter: Usually I try to start each of these rounds with a more well-known album, but fuck it. Do you like sounds? Noises, even? Well have I got great news for you. Top tier EAI to match a top tier album title.

new lists. you know the drill. i appreciate your help 💜

Black Flag— Who's Got The 10½?: Last album this round. Nearly every version of a track from their post-My War work is better here than in studio, and the often juvenile banter is, for whatever reason, charming to me rather than annoying.
September 21, 2025 at 6:21 PM
Celtic Frost— Morbid Tales: Black thrash with a ferocity few other progenitors ever muscled up, what I imagined Venom sounded like when I’d only read about them. Not quite as awe-inspiring as To Mega Therion, but top of the pile regardless.
September 21, 2025 at 6:00 PM
The Lijadu Sisters— Mother Africa: I don’t know jùjú but I know what I like, and I like this a whole lot. Ebullient and rich, dynamic and enchanting, polyrhythmic rounds of funk-indebted folk. Recommended for sunny afternoons where you’ve got nowhere in particular to be.
September 21, 2025 at 5:50 PM
Lusine— Serial Hodgepodge: Sometimes the ambient IDM hits just right, and sometimes it becomes the only slightly cooler version of dental office muzak. Happy to report this hits just right. The drums crunch and splat, the synths float serenely, it’s just a damn nice time.
September 16, 2025 at 10:03 PM
Strapping Young Lad— Heavy As a Really Heavy Thing: A top tier title and a top of the mid tier album, genre-agnostic extreme metal with a sense of humor that is only occasionally annoying. Consensus seems that their next few albums are better, and if that’s true I’ll be delighted.
September 16, 2025 at 9:29 PM
Skeleton Crew— The Country of Blinds: Fred Firth gave the reason for this being Skeleton Crew’s final album as, “We actually started to sound like a normal rock and roll band so it seemed kind of pointless to go on at that point.” I agree with Firth. Rarely bad, never surprising.
September 16, 2025 at 9:20 PM
Kidcrash— Jokes: Mathcore precision and virtuosity in service of skramz-adjacent post-hardcore, and it’s mighty impressive, if just a touch more controlled than I wish. Easy to see why it’s beloved.
September 16, 2025 at 9:14 PM
Jurassic 5— Power in Numbers: These first three J5 albums are shockingly consistent, to the point where I don’t know which I’d recommend most. Nostalgia makes me lean towards this one. fwiw, “A Day At the Races” might remain the best song I ever first heard playing a THPS game.
September 15, 2025 at 9:52 PM
:wumpscut:— Embryodead: It’s ok I guess. Maybe I was just in the wrong mood, but the incredibly 90’s form of self-satisfied edginess here bored me in a way past EBM and aggrotech I’ve checked out haven’t, even when those have pulled from the same palette and outlook.
September 15, 2025 at 9:43 PM
Praxis— Transmutation (Mutatis Mutandis): In the world of experimental funk metal supergroups who often share members (your Science Faxtions or Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains) this is the most compelling I’ve heard, a deeply strange and funny jam band sound collage.
