On his drive to the airport to pick up his freshly adopted son, he prayed for the first time in a long while; he prayed for this whole thing to work. He needed something to live for again.

It was little more than a hole in the wall, and it stuck out like a sore thumb on this side of the city. This would be a good spot for now. It was dimly lit inside. Only the soft glow of the overhead light fixture, with its faded and chipped art deco patterns, and the twinkle of the street outside the bar window provided any real light. The decaying oak walls were dingy with a thin coat of grime, with not even a radio accompanying the soft wall of noise coming from the patrons.

Small was the next best option for today’s snippet.
Despite being small in nature, the hunter’s knife weighed heavier than ever in his flap pocket. It was a relic from his father’s days and intended to be more of a decorative item than a weapon worthy of combat, but he never went into the city without it. It wasn’t even close to being as good as a Ka-Bar, but the blade was sharp as ever, polished for days like these.

You don’t need anyone else but me.” Conrad hesitated. His heart drummed against his chest. This was combat. Combat against his own mother. But even he knew when to surrender. He inched over to her, gaze turned downward, desperate to avoid her burning stare. Frances cupped his cheek, forcing him to stare into the depths of her empty eyes. “Oh, don’t look like that. You know I love you… more than anything in this miserable world.” Her breath was heavy with the rot of alcohol, invisible yet hot on his face. She took him into her arms, and they began to dance.

From my first draft. As usual, the MC takes offense to his wife for existing in a way he personally doesn’t like.
“I’ll be going to Warren’s for the afternoon. Watch over the kid, will you?” “Yes, dear. I’ll make sure dinner is ready when you get back, too.” That flat tone again. No emotion, no heart, no blind adoration or submission. Nothing. It drove him mad with rage, almost fried his nerves at her unintentional insolence. She couldn’t help it, her voice had always been this way since high school, but it still drove needles into his ears and pin pricks into his skin regardless. Still, he gave her a half-hearted smile. “Wonderful.”
