This poem is inspired by something my friend Batool wrote. When I read her words, I couldn't help but reflect on the memories I have of our life in Sudan—how we never experienced such cold weather there. At the same time, I’ve been sick for several days due to the weather here in Gaza. As I read Batool’s poem, these lines began to form in my mind, almost as a reply to her. Today marks the 507th day since the war began, and while many people may think the situation has changed, it has not. Prices remain high, there is still no electricity, and we are living with the scarcity of cooking gas, which we’re only allowed to purchase in limited quantities each month. It's not enough to even heat water for food or to keep warm. So, this poem is the result of the tangled emotions I felt while reading her words. Here are the lines that came to me. ****** **507th Day** I woke up this morning In my grandma’s room, The room that’s never been finished, As we had to travel away, So all of its walls are still grey. I woke up feeling cold and sick, We’re not used to this weather anyway, As we were so, so far away From the land of our ancestors, The land we call home today. I woke up reminiscing today, On the life we’ve left behind In my beloved home, in Sudan, So far from where we are today. I cried and cried, Wishing the pain would go away— The stomachache of my anxieties, The fever that keeps crawling my way. It’s the 507th day, I prayed for mercy to come and stay. We’re growing tired of hunger, frost, And despair that continues to play, Almost every day. Waiting for the sun’s ray, To give us warmth's entree, To disperse the cold away.
