I personally have used paper towel and methylated spirits on my VCR similar to yours with good results when cleaning.
Not a VCR tech but I'd suspect head damage here too.

For me, brake lights, indicators and interior lights are fine, It's just the ungodly brightness that some people equip their cars with that is 2 tons of nope.
