YES. So many adult things read like YA to me now, and I've never been able to articulate why that is. But you're so right, the first person is a huge part of it.

You just broke something open in my mind for me. I read a lot of genre fic (adult and YA fantasy mostly) and I've been losing patience with *something* that I can't quite figure out. I think it might be all the first person (especially in YA) making me feel like I'm being spoon fed. Don't love it

on a trip with the french honors society, our advisor took us there when she didn't know what to do with 20 sixteen-year-olds after we were stranded in the city for an extra day due to snow. there's an ice skating rink down there!

When I see people complain about male loneliness, it is so painfully OBVIOUS to me that most of these lonely men are men who feel entitled to a woman who does that labor for them, who acts as their agent enmeshing them into community through unpaid pro-social labor on their behalf.
