So the right-wing part of Labour (Blairites, Third Way, the Morgan McSweeney-Starmer faction) is actually a minority in the party, but has enormous power to inflict its agenda from above
Yet when there was a vote of members, they'll vote Corbyn etc

FPTP means that you have safe ridings for local govts--and local govt is where ppl enter politics to create change. If it's a safe Labour riding you have to join Labour no matter your politics. So you actually have Lib Dems, Tories in there. Meanwhile the membership is overall quite left...

This interview is so good in so many ways. First the focus on Morgan McSweeney's faction (for which Starmer is just a figurehead) which absolutely loathes the left. But then Holden mentions that a key reason for the internal toxicity & infighting of UK Labour at every level is...First Past The Post.

Even if you're within a framework of growth, innovation isn't helped by deregulation of markets. Huge burts of innovation happened when universities and research were heavily funded by the state. The whole thing is a market fundamentalist fantasy

Update: Re.centre has a new post that's less concerning than the first one. But it begs the Q: if they're not down with the deregulatory neoliberal direction we're now calling Abundance, why did they give it air in the first place?
Is the org having an internecine fight over Abundance, or..?

You can always get funding and looter largesse if you support the goals of the looter class.

And that’s pretty much how the environmental movement has been successfully neutered already, even before this lip service to abundance-deregulation is applied to it
But for some reason their blather has really made my always simmering anger about the hijacking of ENGOs just flare up

Yes, for sure. It begs the question why a bunch of Carleton academics would be pushing neolib economics in the name of climate. Who are they repping?

But to what end? Most accessible audience/market 'segments' probably haven't even heard of abundance (and let's keep it that way). Furthermore these groups are quite mutable. They're better reached by the kind of critiques Mamdani & Polanski are making than this abundance snake oil

The group Re.climate seems to operate out of Carleton U.
Unrelated (or?): Unlike the BC Greens, seems the Ontario Greens have swallowed the nonsensical, market- fundamentalist YIMBY talking points whole.
This stuff is insidious enough without academics trying to peddle it to ENGOs & govts.

This “abundance” term of course has an odd whiff of prosperity gospel about it, or at the very least a quasi religious market fundamentalism.
But pls note: the term was first popularized in PR campaigns by the real estate industry & its astroturf YIMBY supplyist groups. It’s warmed-over trickledown

The climate crisis is deadly serious and that post is one of the glibbest, silliest things I’ve read in a long time.
COME ON. There is no reality in which deregulating capitalism doesn’t destroy - not fix - climate.
The word abundance is obviously radioactive now. What are you doing, re.climate?

Ha ha. I've looked everywhere for an explanation for this. Apple was supposed to be the intuitive, user-friendly interface company... but to have both autocorrect and keyboard sensitivity this bad? Who's in charge

It's not you. The iPhone keyboard really is barely useable.
