What struck me this time is how freely Conrad treats time, jumping backwards and forwards to build tension and develop sympathy for the characters.

I read 'Empire of the Sun' over the summer - glad I did, but it is really grim and unrelenting.

The characters, of course. But I enjoyed how angry Dickens/the narrator was much of the time. And some lovely descriptive passages.
