We’ve had such a warm & sunny fall that some of my plants bloomed again & set a few final fruits. I picked them all today b/c a hard freeze is coming tonight. I think a few might be far enough along to finish ripening on the counter? And I can do a fried green tomatoes thing w/ the rest. #ByeSummer

I recently learned: "tea light" candles are called that because this was their original use. A little trivet under your teapot with a candle inside, to keep the tea warm for several hours. It's lovely.

Do you know about these? I utterly rely on them for all sewing and embroidery. My (very vintage) sewing machine allegedly has a self-threading function but I've never been able to make it work. Needle threaders are much easier.

Come work with me! Lexington Park Library is a busy branch in a diverse community w/ a great children's room, a new kids' makerspace under construction, lots of community partnerships, & terrific co-workers. Short application window- don't wait! #LibraryJobs recruiting.paylocity.com/recruiting/j...

I really need to strip the bed and wash the linens, but…

It was my birthday today, and husbear understood the assignment. #Chocoholic

Tomatoes! My flopped-over, bird-pecked, frequently-forgotten-to-water deck container plant has produced 5 good-looking beefsteak tomatoes, with several more green ones coming along behind. I feel like a proud grandparent. Do I eat them or buy them savings bonds for college?

Was having a very “don’t wanna” kind of day. Just really sluggish and grumpy. But I had to head to our northernmost branch to cover storytimes, and I gotta say, reading “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” at top volume several times really does wonders for my state of mind. #LibraryLife

This town apparently rolls up the sidewalks & puts them away at 5pm, but we found an open pizza place. B got “The Vesuvius,” described as “a large calzone stuffed with spaghetti & meatballs. The way the waitress chuckled as she took his order should have been a warning…
Look at this abomination!

Adding to list of best jobs: the person who gets to drive the train-Jeep between Frostburg & Cumberland to tow back the rail bikes.
May 17, 2025 at 4:12 PM
Next up on our minication: a train excursion on the Frostburg Flyer! Our chariot for today is restored steam engine 1309. We’ve booked lunch service in the dining car, because we are fancy.

Late in the day there were thunderstorms. We thought there was enough of a break to park & check out the beautiful Pennsylvania Monument. NOPE. The skies reopened & we took shelter under the dome w/ a few other people. The statue on top was STRUCK BY LIGHTNING while we were underneath.

Husbear & I visited Gettysburg today for the 1st time as adults. We paid for 3rd-party audio guided tour app- super worth it! Much more detail & context than the free Park Service one. The narration also pointed out each monument w/ a dog, like Sallie the Staffie. The goodest girl.

What can I make with a giant pile of garlic chives? I had to pull all these volunteers from an old raised bed so I could recycle the soil, and they’re so fresh and green I don’t want to throw them in the compost. I’ve already made cheddar chives biscuits but what else??

I must again sing praise to TecNu, the magical poison ivy scrub. I got into poison Ivy while weeding & welts were already rising before I realized. I’m wildly allergic & in the bad old days I’d be in total misery by now. TecNu saved the day!

Dammit. I had a VERY EASY simple hemming job to do. But I messed up threading so the tension was wonky so the machine sucked in a bit of the fabric & got all jammed up & now it’s hours later and I have the thing disassembled and am pulling shreds of thread and fabric out with jewelry pliers. 🤦‍♀️

Just texted my mom to see if she remembers whether I got 1 or 2 measles shots as a kid. She does not remember. There have been measles cases in my state, I work with kids & the public, & my bestie is a lung transplant patient who would NOT survive measles. So I guess it's booster time for me!

Made teeny pies for Easter dessert. They came out just right! I 🩷my fancy convection oven- no soggy bottoms!
April 20, 2025 at 11:28 PM
Husbear sneaked downstairs before me to plant this “Easter basket”- a new plant pot filled with m&m’s, a Reese’s bunny, and a pack of my favorite pens. He gets me. 🩷🐰

We’re saying goodbye to Twitch today. She’s hung in there another whole week, but now she’s telling us it’s time. We’re going to miss this beautiful sassy little bosscat so much.

Spent the morning at a middle school for a really cool event: combo career day/touch-a-truck. They invited ppl w/ careers that involve a specialty vehicle. 1st: love that bookmobiles are categorized w/ fire trucks. 2nd: I had some really awesome convos w/ kids about libraries. #LibraryLife

Twitch went to the vet (yelling her outrage all the way) b/c she's barely eating & acting like she doesn't feel good. Test results = this beautiful 17-year-old lady is in end-stage kidney failure. We have maybe a few days left to spoil her rotten(er) & say goodbye. This hurts so much every time.

Local SoMD friends: do you know any great candidates to be summer library interns? I have 3 openings for paid 10-week seasonal positions, 1 at each library, assisting the children's and teen librarians with Summer Reading programs and activities. www.stmalib.org/summer-inter...
