Wow! My “little” cousin, whom I babysat as a toddler, safely delivered a 6-lb 6-oz baby girl & a 7-lb 8-oz baby boy, 5 min apart, both healthy & with demonstrably strong lungs! That’s 14 pounds of babies! This was a tough pregnancy & we’re so relieved and happy they all came through well in the end.

REALLY need to have the talk again w/ my dad about leaving serious-sounding cryptic messages. Came out of a meeting to 3 back-to-back missed calls & a text that just said “Call Dad ASAP.” Given that he NEVER calls me at work, I assumed tragedy & disaster, called him back w/ pounding heart.

Good news, I guess, but it won’t bring back the editor’s mother who literally died of stress from the cops RAIDING HER HOME because they didn’t like what the newspaper said about them.

1.) Underground propane tanks have an expected lifespan of 20-30 years.
2.) My underground propane tank is 27 years old.
3.) A sign of pinhole leaks in an underground propane tank is an area of dead grass above it.
4.) Replacing an underground propane tank costs about $5500.

We’ve had such a warm & sunny fall that some of my plants bloomed again & set a few final fruits. I picked them all today b/c a hard freeze is coming tonight. I think a few might be far enough along to finish ripening on the counter? And I can do a fried green tomatoes thing w/ the rest. #ByeSummer

Man, when the Friends of the Library have their used book sales, you gotta get up early. Husbear and I dawdled very slightly over breakfast, arrived 20 min after the sale opened to find no parking and the tables already half empty!

Wondering why no one likes your posts anymore, even among your friends? It's because @jay.bsky.team and team have decided to hide a huge amount of content from all of our feeds by default.

Here's how to turn it off.

Important detail the Sun leaves out is that the county board had banned it in a closed meeting AFTER a review committee studied the book & voted to keep it, & the superintendent ruled on appeal to keep it.

Quote I just starred from this webinar on play-based learning:

"'Cute' is not a developmental objective."

I want to graffiti this on the walls of libraries and early childhood programs.

I was just interviewed by a Library School student about our public library's collection development practices. This poor innocent had NO IDEA what they were letting themselves in for. Once unleashed, I will talk about library collections and everything related to them AT GREAT LENGTH. Great length.

So I guess my woods were a little bit on fire last night and I didn't know it? I just knew the power was out and it was very windy. Apparently many trees fell on a long segment of wires and tore them to bits and transformers exploded and started a brush fire that was then fanned by the high wind.

I recently learned: "tea light" candles are called that because this was their original use. A little trivet under your teapot with a candle inside, to keep the tea warm for several hours. It's lovely.

I am a good public speaker. I /teach/ public speaking. I lead packed public library programs and teach conference sessions for hundreds of people. Often while wearing very silly hats!
So... why is a 5-min verbal report (of good news!) to the Library Board, (who are all nice people!) so terrifying?

As a physicist I can easily calculate time dilation from relativistic motion (time slows when you're moving fast) or proximity to a massive object (time slows in gravity) but I have yet to find a solution for emotional time dilation (the task takes five minutes to complete but six weeks to start) 🫠

Tomatoes! My flopped-over, bird-pecked, frequently-forgotten-to-water deck container plant has produced 5 good-looking beefsteak tomatoes, with several more green ones coming along behind. I feel like a proud grandparent. Do I eat them or buy them savings bonds for college?

This is just to say

I took the plums and the brochure
from the cardboard box
you left for passersby.

Thank you,
they were delicious,
and freedom from censorship

is one of the most
important
freedoms

of all.
Free plums and propaganda.

Was having a very “don’t wanna” kind of day. Just really sluggish and grumpy. But I had to head to our northernmost branch to cover storytimes, and I gotta say, reading “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” at top volume several times really does wonders for my state of mind. #LibraryLife
