Valverde was active in downtown L.A.’s queer scene and frequented Cooper Do-nuts, where LGBTQ+ customers fought back against police harassment in 1959. In 2023, L.A. named the intersection of Main and 2 Streets as “Cooper Do-nuts/Nancy Valverde Square,” its first public monument to a lesbian. /end
