You make a really important point- because for a long time medical training has believed the myth that adverse working conditions 'toughen up' young doctors- but actually the evidence is very clear that a well treated workforce provides better patient care, not worse.

My partner @dylangriff10.bsky.social recently had to go to the ED at Fiona Stanley and had only good things to say about his experience. Not surprised that things are organised well behind the scenes.

I'm such a scaredy-cat, I can't even keep normal plushies in my bedroom because they startle me in low light. If I stay in other people's spare bedrooms I have to stash their teddy bears etc in the wardrobe. But I always assumed that was just a 'me' thing.

Good on your son! The 'trad wife' thing is a myth, of course- a figment of a very specific sociocultural sector of society. I'm gently poking fun at it 🤣

Well, that's true I guess. I shall feel less guilty 🤗

I've heard others say the same- and that the attendance at his lectures was often largely spectators, drawn to see whether his utterances were as outrageous as reported.

When I was doing my DPhil in Oxford I went to a talk he gave. It was excruciating: in content & his then views. A senior colleague said “you can only get away with this if you have a Nobel prize” I’ve met other Nobel Laureates who were amazing intellects but also humble: I’d hope he was an outlier

You need a lot less than a nobel prize to get away with a lot of bigotry in science even today. It's a myth to pretend like it's just happens because of some imagined exceptional genius outweighs it. Neither is half as true as they think and we lose out on the geniuses they push away.

Certainly learnt to be resilient, creative & persistent in an environment where you were tolerated but not ‘enabled to thrive’ . The idea that Ginger Roger’s did everything that Fred Astaire did, but backwards & in high heels resonated, as well as this quote👇🏽. Also defined my own view of ‘success’

This is still true in academia and in surgery. And the 'solution', when I try to bring awareness to it, is often to suggest that women must somehow be responsible for getting ourselves into the necessary social groups. Which is challenging when their main dialogue happens in the men's change room. 🥴
