The fall of an empire is supposed to be a dramatic thing. But the reality is far less exciting.

It happens in the text of legislation nobody bothered reading, in local elections nobody followed, in a thousand tiny disasters that amounted to a thousand little cuts on the body politic.
I'm a historian, and I studied the fall of Rome. Here's what life is like in a dying empire.
It's the little things.

@fetterman.senate.gov maybe you won’t burn the village down to save it, but did you ever consider that the budget bill you’re voting for cuts billions from Medicare and Medicaid? I fear these cuts will have a worse long term effect on more people than a government shutdown will on federal employees.

@rbreich.bsky.social I’ve been reading @stephaniekelton.bsky.social book and was wondering what your opinion on MMT is? It’s difficult to advocate for rhetorically, but it almost seems like common sense. Do you see federal taxes more as a way to fund the gov or as a tool for wealth redistribution?

A democratic, liberal international order is favorable to American nat’l sec. Free trade, international rules and law, and humanitarian aid is beneficial to everyone involved. I think Hal Brands should be mandatory reading for high school.
They are so simple.
conservative whining about foreign aid is great because they think we’re just handing money out like a charity when in reality most of this money is strategically propping up American interests across the globe

Diversity, on one hand, increased unit cohesion and efficiency by integrating different solutions and opinions. On the other hand, it’s a solution to a symptom of an endemic problem where non-white non-male individuals have been denied equal opportunities. Either way, it’s a good deal. #walmart

I think that at the same time we defend intellectualism in America, we have to defend the under educated; people without much of an education didn’t choose it, nobody ever let them choose. Red states aren’t evil, they’ve just been left behind, and stereotyping them isn’t going to help change anyone.
