🧵Teaching Students NOT to use AI

So...I've tried to explain to my students why they aren't allowed to use genAI in MY class (even though the university seems to be encouraging them to)

I've written this document to try to explain WHY it's a bad idea rather than just forbidden fruit.

Is that you, Charlie Brown? Is this me?
Deep down, in places you do t talk about at parties, you NEED me on that wall, Charlie Brown.
I’m not the guy you kill, Charlie Brown. I’m the guy you buy!

More than Columbian Exchange? More than the French Revolution? More than the Reformation, the printing press, the Industrial Revolution (And that’s just Europe?) Really?

The danger is that somebody uses this quackery as an excuse to demonise autistic or other neurodivergent people. Maybe someone like the present American health secretary.
JFC...people obsessed with Hitler's genitalia are SO FUCKING WEIRD.

It's also just ...not super helpful. Because hidden JUST below the surface in all these things is an attempt to...explain Hitler.

Or, rather, to explain him in some unique way instead of just seeing him as a normal, awful human.
Did Hitler really have a ‘micropenis’? The dubious documentary analysing the dictator’s DNA

Describe a character in Greek mythology the way someone trying to defend a politician would. I’ll start.

Agamemnon: He made hard choices to ensure good sailing conditions for his fleet. I’d like to see woke liberals like Homer do that.
Describe a character in Greek mythology the way someone trying to defend a politician would. I’ll start.

Narcissus: He was targeted while just doing his job- investigating, looking into things that others wouldn’t.
Describe a character in Greek mythology the way someone trying to defend a politician would. I’ll start.

Medusa: Greece was dangerously low on hyper-realistic statuary until she rolled up her sleeves and got to work

For those who don’t know much about the circumstances of the Medals of Honor at Wounded Knee, it’d be a bit like if they gave out VCs for Amritsar or Bloody Sunday.
This man is ignorant. Wounded Knee was a massacre, not a battle.

I’ll give this scite thing about a week before it’s clogged up with Nazi garbage.
Ok, AI slop. Let's go.

I took this for a spin to see how good it actually is 👇

Met this amazing young man at the We Have Ways Fest who was drawing caricatures of the speakers and wanted me to sign mine.

Just a great group of folks!
