Here's a cool new paper on LOD for aggregates. The high-level approach is to voxelize the world. Voxelization approaches have been tried before (famously Blue Sky's in-house renderer use a ton of voxelization); this paper's core contribution is a new "aggregate BSDF" for appearance preservation.
