I feel like saying Gibbons/Rude’s World’s Finest is great is an understatement, so instead I’ll just highlight how it has a scene where Batman is able to admit his feelings to Jim Gordon, and sit in a withdrawn manner, and still feel like Batman. Rare feat.
“I felt *foolish*, Jim”. Batman sits on the roof of Gotham PD, half-gargoyle squat and half… something else. Foetal? Withdrawn? Jim Gordon reassures Batman, saying that Lex Luthor making Batman look bad was as much luck as anything, but both consider that Batman was used as a pawn in some wider game, that Luthor is aiming to take control of Gotham piece by piece, and that this was a part of that plan. As they lament the restraints they’re under in this situation it begins to rain, and conversation moves to the Joker’s recent appearance in Metropolis, and of Superman, who Jim refers to as Batman’s friend. “Superman? We’re hardly friends, but perhaps… we might be allies” Batman says, as the page comes to a close.

Weekend Weezer delivers unto us an album better than I remember. Still some awkward messes (fuck off Ryan Adams), but a couple of strong openers and a silly song about sex and socks means that it's better than the last two. 671.

The cover to Weezer's Hurley. It's Jorge Garcia, cropped from a photo of him and Rivers together backstage at a Lopez Tonight taping, and made to look like a cd. He played Hurley in Lost. Remember Lost? I should rewatch Lost. Anyway yeah I remember this mix-up era of instrument changes and external songwriters being nothing but tragic, but time has kind of made me appreciate the fun of several songs on this, which is more than I could ever say for Raditude or Red. Kinda makes EWBAITE feel like it won't be so cathartic next week. Ah well. A good time. This is the 693rd album added to the week.

Open Mike Eagle's latest often feels chill, despite being incredibly cutting throughout, a fascinating balance of two seemingly contradictory aspects that makes for one of 2025's best listens at 368.

Fave track is Spain, but I change my mind a lot on this one. The cover to Home Counties' Humdrum. A veritable renaissance party is happening, and you're down below, looking up at it. Al Doyle's production here is pretty noteworthy, guiding the band towards this nice polished synthy indie rock sound, that occasionally explodes into something more. It's great, I like it a lot.

Lily Allen's return is as wonderful as it is absolutely gut-wrenching, a granular dismantling of a relationship gone wrong that's vulnerable and destructive, and never less than a good listen. In at 274.

Entries 271 to 280 of Every Album Ever, Ranked. West End Girl enters at 274, just above U2's Achtung Baby, and just below Self Esteem's Prioritise Pleasure. Fave track is Relapse The cover to Lily Allen's West End Girl. A painting of the woman herself in a bright blue polka dot puffer. There's two interesting things going on with the discourse around West End Girl. Well, there's much more than that but I want to talk about two specific things. The first is about whether people rate works too highly for being open and vulnerable, something I was starting to feel concerned about earlier this year with Hope Tala's album, and something I can see people applying to Lily Allen if they aren't already a fan of her very specific and influential London singer-songwriter style. It can blind you to the production aspects or the instrumentation on the record, which are very good, but absolutely a weaker aspect. The other thing is Lily Allen herself, a person capable of problematic behaviour and being the offending party in a relationship, leading some to be unreceptive to her dismantling of David Harbour's alleged manipulations, trespasses and abuses. To that I say one must have good faith towards those who have been through some shit, even if they have been the person putting others through shit beforehand. We are, ultimately, all human, and recognising the pain and hurt in a person who isn't perfect is some pretty basic empathy, and does little to soften the connection the listener can make to what Lily has been through in her marriage. A secret third thing is people being weird about poly relationships in response to this, which are a very different thing to this coercive mess pushing Lily into also trying non-monogamy as an attempt to salvage the relationship some. No functioning poly relationship should involve anyone being pressured or forced into a situation because of the person they love. Anyone doing that is an abuser, simple as. Anyway, good album? Good album. This is the 786th album added to the list, the 80th from 2025, and as of this writing is the 20th best in year.

Ashnikko's sophomore effort is a sexy good dance time that is pulsing with a depth and self-awareness that's really prominent in the scene this year. Gonna have a tear in your eye while grinding in the club at 434.

I expect it might, when we're talking about one of the most consistently brilliant bands of the modern era.
