If you've blown up the boat and killed everyone aboard, why would you make a follow-up attack? To break the wreckage into smaller pieces? The only explanation for the follow-up is that they knew - or believed - there were survivors and they intended to kill them.

It was a transitional moment, from a style of acting that had been the standard all through the 40s and 50s into something new that created the conventions the define modern cinema. There are great scenes but a lot of those seminal films no longer hold up because they fall between two stools.
