I was an arcade rat as a kitten and even today I frequent video arcades. Hell, I even made my species' natural habitat video arcades

This lack of size compared to other large cats is misleading though. Sneps can take advantage of their small size, thick grey fur coats, big pawpads, and powerful muscles to hunt most anything that moves. They are *still* lethal predetors.

Half-snep but I think I can chime in.

Believe it or not there are some differences. Sneps are usually small compared to other big cats. While larger than lynxes or clouded leopards, their size pales in comparison to most other big cats.

As for why this game gets less attention than it should? I feel like it has to do with high difficulty stemming from realism. Victory Run was ahead of its time in that regard. In spite of tech limits however this game is superb, a gem I recommend driving game fans check out for this console.
September 25, 2024 at 12:58 AM
Another quirk is how this game is timed. The timer on top is your reserve time. This ticks down when you use up your stage time (on bottom). When your reserve time runs out, the game is finished. Finish a stage before you run out of stage time, and you'll keep your unused reserve time.

Unlike other similar games, Victory Run is surprisingly steeped in realism for its era. When parts wear out, they break. The suspension will wear out quicker if you crest a hill too fast. And your have to change gears yourself as well, or the engine and transmission will wear out.

Gameplay is fairly straight forward. It's similar to Rad Racer, Pole Position or Outrun, a 2.5 racer with a third person view on a scrolling road, where you must pass other racers and reach checkpoints as quickly as possible. You must also account for parts wear, more on that later.

For #TurbografxTuesday, I'd like to show interest in what I think might be the console's most underrated title:

Victory Run was released in 1987 for the PC Engine, and was a launch day title for the Turbografx-16's North American release in 1987. It was a racing game set in the Paris-Dakar Rally.

Challenging stages are this game's bonus rounds, which are encountered every three stages. Shoot all 40 enemies and you'll get a bonus. This is also where you'll hear most of the OST, which is an eclectic mix of traditional music styles, in the TG16's sweet soundfont.

Most stages are the typical fixed playfield, in line with other Galaxian/Galaga titles. However, the game has some scrolling stages as well. These stages have full formations and even bosses to fight. They also differ depending on which path you choose.
September 17, 2024 at 10:05 PM
Fighters can be captured by several enemy types on the playfield. You will lose a life if you let one of them capture you. Like in the first Galaga, a single fighter can be captured then turned into a dual fighter. In this game, you can let a double fighter get captured and make a triple fighter!
September 17, 2024 at 9:51 PM
Eagle eyed players may notice how powerful those shots are; the game's twist is that you can choose to start with either a single fighter, or a double. If you pick the double, you'll have one fewer life to start with but gain more firepower from the start of the game. Yet that's not all.

Galaga 88/90's gameplay is much like its predecessors, Galxian and Galaga. The player is fixed to left/right movement at the bottom of a playfield with a top-down persepctive. In many ways it harkons back to the early 1980's of simple arcade shooters, a possible early example of a throwback title.
September 17, 2024 at 9:34 PM
Galaga 88 started life as a coin-op title, sucessful in Japan, but not in the US. It was ported to the PC Engine under its original title in 1989, and to the Turbografx-16 under the name Galaga 90. It was the third sequel in a long line of fixed shooters released by Namco.
