13 basho to sekiwake for Aonishiki breaks the record of 14 held by Konishiki, so he *is* the fastest ever for anyone starting at the bottom (tsukedashi are a separate thing, I don't think anyone is touching Ichinojo's 5 basho)

"sumotori" is also acceptable, right?

It's our two sekiwake

Terunofuji too, right? Maybe at ex-Isegahama's kanreki? I remember Midorifuji having a blast as one of the "opponents"

I also feel like the small guys who outperform their weight tend to rely a lot on throws, trips, and the like, which wasn't his game. I can't think of someone who is small, with short reach, and is an oshi specialist

He's gotta be lighter than Enho now, tough to get past Makushita at that size regardless of skill level, no? I do think he got heavier than would have been optimal.

Aonishiki racking up Tim Sumo awards like he racks up special prizes (fully deserved, don't get me wrong)

He was a big prospect when he debuted in 2020, but kept getting derailed by injuries; hopefully that's behind him. Interesting game plan today, he's more of a yotsu guy.

Having his photo taken like that is ... brave?

I usually think of it as epistasis for two alleles of a gene when the effect of both in cis differs from the sum.

As David Botstein would always emphasize in his genetics lectures.

Eric, do we know how well-matched the variant they target is against the currently circulating ones? cc @jpweiland.bsky.social

The YO thing can go on for as long as needed (though in practice, the longest stint is 3 basho, most recently in 2023)
