There wasn’t a “right” time to do this, and there wasn’t some Magical Christmas Land list of concessions you were gonna get if you ONLY had the guts to let it continue a little longer.

The Dems decided to end it now and get no real concessions… instead of ending it later and getting no real concessions.

Don’t get me wrong, I can’t stand Schumer and I think he’s failing to meet the moment in innumerable ways, but I don’t think this is one of them necessarily.

And it worked! People got mad! But you have to have an endgame in mind — the endgame can’t be “they agree to extend the subsidies” because that’s never gonna happen… so at what point do you end it?

And meanwhile, keeping the gov’t shut down is really bad. SNAP, furloughs, air traffic control…

There’s never a bad time to read Stealing Home if we’re being honest.

I don’t know where we go from here, but I hope it’s forward. We need to do the next good thing, not try to convince ourselves that previous good things were good enough.

Maybe this is just the way the cycle goes. I’m told that when I was a little kid in ‘92, James Carville had that same “rock star” status. By 2008, his time had passed. By 2020, he was a punchline.

Obama staffers and Pod Save America bros aren’t writing the next chapter; they wrote the previous one.

For them to sign onto a document that says, among other things, that we shouldn’t be talking about student loans or Medicare for All because they’re “too unpopular,” and that we should throw the trans community under the bus in the name of political expediency… I don’t recognize those guys anymore.
October 27, 2025 at 11:28 PM
The Democratic Party had spent years telling those guys to be patient, think realistically, don’t overreach. They said no, they found a candidate who inspired us to dream bigger, and then got that candidate elected. Not by telling us what couldn’t be done, but by reminding us of our highest ideals.

And it’s wild to me that Bernie Sanders—who has spent his whole career enforcing his own purity tests and not giving a damn about political expediency—has decided he’s willing to look past the Nazi tattoo in the name of political expediency.
