The free to play architecture is off putting but you can always define your own fun: throw on a podcast and just ignore it all.

Very late to it but Rain World was my game of 2024. It was so much deeper than I expected with rewarding and memorable moments. I’m very glad I took the time to get into it and that there was a demo around that allowed me to.
Playing as the Monk / Easy difficulty was the right choice first up.
