If I had to guess, it's a combination of wanting to get a good return on the training investment (I believe it can take up to 3-4 years of training & supervision) and decline in mental acuity with age (solving 4D puzzles in real time with high stakes).

When I first moved to LA I would drive around to purposely get lost, then pull out the Thomas Guide and figure out where I was and how to get home. Again and again. It was fun, and it got progressively harder to get lost as I learned the city.

The RFI data comes from NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) data. The map shows their average estimate of RFI for June 2025. The GPSJAM data is from June 15, 2025. salinity.oceansciences.org/smap-radiome...

Chart (slightly tweaked) showing the total number of jobs posted to HN's "Who is hiring? posts. Data from hnhiring.com. After July of 2022 the numbers are *dismal*, about 1/3 what they were before COVID. January 2025 was the worst month ever since 2018.
