On Dec. 20, for the first time ever an aircraft landed itself, autonomously, after an in-flight emergency! A King Air 200 lost cabin pressurization, which triggered Garmin's Emergency Autoland. The pilots put oxygen masks on and let the plane land itself. aviation-safety.net/wikibase/564... 1/

My quick and dirty thoughts on Trump's short-sighted, stupid, and self-defeating ban on foreign made drones.

Banning foreign drones won't make us safer. Instead, it'll encourage people to build their own drones - which are way harder to track and to control.
The USA Bans Foreign-Made Drones, in Trump's Grand Idiot Tradition
It's December 23rd, and the USA has officially banned the import of all foreign made drones and "critical components." Here's a very quick and dirty run-down of my thoughts. Although if you'd like t...

Jack Sweeney's TheAirTraffic tracker has been around for a while, but it sounds like he's planning some changes.
I never planned to build an ADSBExchange alternative, but after it was sold in 2023, I was effectively forced to.

It’s been on the back burner, but TheAirTraffic now has a new main page, and I’ll be launching a user friendly replacement for the tar1090 tracking page soon.

I’ve been using an agent that can write its own new skills and it feels like unlocking a superpower. Whatever idea I have—FAA database search, summarizing YouTube videos, editing its own conversational history—it implements, I can use it immediately, and it persists forever.

We backed up Spotify (metadata and music files). It’s distributed in bulk torrents (~300TB). It’s the world’s first “preservation archive” for music which is fully open (meaning it can easily be mirro...

This is a great video about the growth of Flock's persistent AI-powered video surveillance system even as they demonstrate a fundamental incompetence at software engineering and little concern for security.

Remembering the F-111F WSO who spent years deciphering images on the plane's crappy radar display. During his wife's ultrasound, the OB-GYN said "Sorry, I don't see anything." WSO: "It's right there," and twiddled the contrast and other knobs until the embryo was visible. Saved his daughter's life.

Guess why this Avelo ICE plane had to return to the gate, according to a source at Avelo.

Ready?

Because a smoke alarm went off as they were taxiing to the runway, and it was an ICE flight guard smoking in the lav.

I like this story that GPT's sycophancy was a side effect of people not wanting to hear the unvarnished truth of its observations of them. I tried the suggested prompt in o3, it gave pretty good results.
